The best Leeds restaurant - but it is hidden away and you might miss it

There's a newish restaurant in Leeds city centre which – until coronavirus lockdown 2.0 – was sending diners into a bit of froth.

But even though you'll have walked past it several times you may not have noticed it.

Caracas Grill/La Taberna is hidden away in a basement on York Place – but it has accumulated a collection of near-flawless reviews since the two restaurants joined forces in 2018.

At lunchtime, it's a Venezuelan grill while in the evening, it's a Spanish tapas bar.

The former means barbecued meats with beans, rice and spicy salsas while the latter comprises Iberian small plates, such as bravas (spicy fried potatoes), pimientos de Padron (fried and salted Galician peppers) and chorizo in red wine.

Tapas restaurants are ten a penny these days, but this is no ordinary tapas joint if you read La Taberna's Tripadvisor reviews.

Of the 292 reviews left on the leisure review website, 271 receive the full five stars. Here's a selection of the most recent.

Jimbo1993 raves: "Delicious meal. 10 out of 10 for food and service. Fantastic menu, great environment and could not recommend it enough."

SBarnacle22 posts: "I came here all the time for lunch pre-Covid and just came here for dinner for the first time. It was incredible. Perfect place for any occasion and reasonably priced, great atmosphere and friendly hosts."

278paulaw comments: "The staff are very friendly and the food is amazing; you can feel it is prepared with love...

"We had tortilla de papa [Spanish omlette], empanadillas de atún [tuna mini pastries], black pudding and a meat of the day. Everything was delicious. For dessert, creme caramel – superb!"

And Siandee has finally found a tapas place in Leeds to meet her standards.

She posts: "We have never found a good tapas in Leeds but the search is over! Great food, great atmosphere and friendly, happy staff. We can’t wait to come back and try some other dishes. Topside beef (one of the specials), prawns and tortilla were awesome."

LeedsLive can't wait to try it when the pandemic is over.
