Nine of the best historic sites to visit in and around Edinburgh

As we begin the new year it's a great time to stretch the legs, get some fresh air, and soak in some history.

Here in Edinburgh, we're lucky to be surrounded with relics from the past to visit and enjoy, some of which date back as far as 140 AD.

Edinburgh began as a settlement in the late 11th century, when King Malcolm III built Edinburgh Castle; and in the 1,000 years since then our rich history can be found across the Lothian's through statues and monuments.

Long before Edinburgh Castle, the Roman impact on our local area can be found in places such as Cramond Fort.

Elsewhere in the Lothian area, the legacy of Mary Queen of Scots lingers in castles such as Craigmillar, or Linlithgow Palace.

All over the city are opportunities to explore some of Scotland's history, while getting some well needed outdoor exercise after a few weeks of indulgence.

We've put together some of the Lothian's most beautiful and interesting spots for your January outings, and more images and information on Edinburgh's stunning historic monuments can be found below.
