The best goal-kickers in world rugby have finally been ranked using years of evidence

Wales duo Leigh Halfpenny and Dan Biggar are the best goal-kickers in the world, according to the statistics.

Until now, anecdotal evidence tended to suggest that the two Gorseinon products were there or there abouts but now the data has arrived to back it up.

South African website  www.goalkickers.co.za  has devised an algorithm that takes into account not only each player's goalkicking success rate but also the difficulty of the kicks they attempted.

The difficulty of each kick is given a rating, with 10 being the highest. That difficulty rating is then used to establish a 'value added' statistic, which illustrates how many more points a player scored more than he would be expected to - relative to other professional goal-kickers.

The higher the 'value added', the better the goalkicking performance. It also works in reverse and produces a negative score for players missing kicks they really ought to be nailing.

Statistics gathered include just competition international rugby, meaning the Six Nations, Rugby Championship and Rugby World Cup matches stretching back to 2015 have been used.

Summer tour matches and autumn internationals are not included.

When all the numbers are crunched, it spews out a table of the best kickers in the world, topped by Halfpenny and Biggar.

Top of the pile is the full-back, who actually has a worse success rate than Biggar, but the difficulty of Halfpenny's kicks is much greater and therefore, his 'value added' score moves him to the top of the table.

Below Biggar in third place is Scotland's Greig Laidlaw, followed by England's Owen Farrell and then Argentina's Nicolas Sanchez.

All Blacks fly-half Beauden Barrett, better known for his running game and distribution, ranks dead last out of the 52 kickers that have been ranked.

As well as Halfpenny and Biggar, three other Welshmen are listed.

Rhys Priestland is in 10th, one ahead of All Black legend Dan Carter, Rhys Patchell comes in at 14th and Gareth Anscombe is 24th.

Whilst the formula put together by the goalkickers website may not be perfect, it is the closest thing yet to a definitive answer to the question over who is the world's best goalkicker.
