The Best Floor-Standing Speakers Under $1,000

Bookshelf speakers and smaller systems are great for people with limited space, but many people find that their sound is inferior to a full-on audio system, especially those with larger rooms. Tower speakers step in to fill this void, housing multiple individual speakers in a stand-up enclosure. Many have independent tweeters (the type of speakers that produce the highest range frequency), midrange speakers and subwoofers to cover the whole spectrum of sounds and volumes.

The problem, as with almost any type of speaker, is that there are hundreds to choose from, especially in the sub-$1,000 range. I researched the top speaker brands to find the best floor-standing speakers that deliver on the best sound quality, most attractive designs and highest level of value in the price range.

Here are the top three models:

Klipsch 5.1 Reference Premiere 250F

With a compact design, the RP 250F is a great value choice for anyone on a budget. They’re a bit heavy and may require some real muscle to move around, but the sound quality is well worth the strained back. As a pair, the speakers come in three colors, which can complement a wide variety of home décor.

Looking good has to be matched with great sound, and the Klipsch speakers deliver on that front as well. With both movies and music, the RP 250F towers deliver solid bass at any volume, and with no distortion. Vocal clarity is impressive, and treble comes through cleanly. The speakers are capable of 400 watts of maximum power.

Monitor Audio Monitor 200

The Monitor 200 uses dual-chamber construction with two bass ports at the rear. There’s a dome tweeter, a 5.5-inch midrange driver and a matching bass driver in each one. This gives the speakers the ability to deliver powerful bass, clear mids and very clean highs. Volume is not a problem for the monitors, and distortion is nonexistent, even with loud playback.Though these are not exactly “budget” speakers, their plain construction may lead some buyers to more aesthetic brands. They’re available in three finishes: black, white, or walnut, with grey baffles. The overall design is very simple, but the build quality is solid, nonetheless.

Q Acoustics 3050 Floor Standing Speakers

As one of the best floor-standing speakers in its price range, the 3050 can give many speakers costing twice as much a run for their money. The enclosure is made from dual-layered panels that makes for a sturdy and stiff support that gives the speakers equally solid sound and bass response. The 3050 is able to fill any room with rich, authoritative sound that manages to stay clean and crisp at even the loudest volumes. The 3050 is an upgrade over previous models, as the company has made the wiring terminals more accessible underneath the enclosure.

The bass is strong and controlled, while trebles and mids come through clearly in both music, vocals and cinematic sound effects. Because of their ability to project, the speakers can be placed quite far apart without losing their stereo effect, further increasing their utility in spaces of different sizes.
