It’s very easy to spend a lot of money on an electric toothbrush. Prices from our selection range from £9 right up to £300, but there are often bargains to be found, with many models in the end-of-year sales. Here’s our pick of some of the best electric toothbrushes across all budgets.

The best for budget brushing
Oral-B Pro 2 2000N (£35)
A great Oral-B model that won’t break the bank is the Oral-B Pro 2 2000N. It may not come with all the bells and whistles that you find with lots of the more expensive models but, for a budget electric toothbrush, this still packs a punch. Once switched on, the Pro 2 2000N will notify you every 30 seconds to tell you that it’s time to move on to the next section of teeth, before turning itself off after two minutes. If it detects that you are pressing too hard with the brush, it will slow the motor down so you don’t damage your gums. All this for under £40 – what a bargain!

The best for personalised brushing
Oral-B Genius 9000 (£300)
With multiple brush modes, the Oral-B Genius 9000 can be “personalised” to give the best and most comfortable toothbrushing for you and your teeth. If you have particularly sensitive gums, one of the modes slows down the rotation speed so it’s gentler, or you can use the whitening setting to help clean stained teeth. The Genius 9000 even comes with a suction cup for your phone, so you can use the Oral-B app’s “Position Detection” system to film yourself brushing your teeth. Your phone will let you know when you have spent enough time on an area and you should move on. At £300 it’s not cheap, but it can often be found at a much lower price.

The best for brushing with an app
Philips HX9191/06 FlexCare Platinum Connected Sonic toothbrush (£270)
The Philips HX9191/06 toothbrush comes with a little extra help in the form of an app that links your phone to the brush. It may sound odd, but the benefits are interesting. The app will let you know if you’re pressing too hard on your teeth and gums, or moving the brush too much (something you don’t need to do with electric models), and can even let you know if you’ve missed a spot. It also comes with a brush head sanitiser that uses UV light to kill off bacteria lurking in the bristles.

The best for timing your brushing
Philips HX6511/50 (£50)
The Philips HX6511/50 is another good example of a great, lower-budget electric toothbrush. In appearance, there’s not much difference between this and other Philips models, but it doesn’t come with the usual added extras such as a travel pouch. However, it has the standard two-minute timer (the amount of time dentists suggest teeth should be brushed for) with 30-second notifications so you know when to brush the next section of your teeth. The thoughtful Philips developers designed the HX6511/50 to slowly build up power over the first 14 uses, so you get used to using it – excellent if this is your first electric toothbrush, as your gums may feel rather sensitive otherwise.

The best for travel
Colgate ProClinical 250+ (£30)
Colgate is better known for toothpaste than electric toothbrushes, however the Colgate ProClinical 250+ is a neat electric brush. It’s a simple-to-use basic model and, being lightweight and slim, it’s perfect for trips and holidays as it takes up very little room when you travel. Just pop the cap on over the brush and you’re away, literally. The ProClinical 250+ takes around 10 hours to charge, and the charge should last around three weeks. Colgate is so sure you’ll like it, it gives you a 30-day trial period. If you don’t like it, post it back in its box, with the receipt, and it will give you your money back.

The best for babies
BabySonic (£9)
For those who feel the benefit of an electric over a manual toothbrush, you may want your little ones to join the electric revolution too. If you do, be sure to get a specific toddler toothbrush such as the BabySonic as it’s not as powerful as grown-up versions. It’s battery powered, lasting for months on end and comes with two different sized heads, for different ages. The head lights up, which helps entertain the child, as well as shining a guiding light on their teeth. There’s the usual two-minute reminder, with 30-second notification, to get them used to having their teeth brushed for the right amount of time.

The best for travelling light
Fairywill FW-515 (£18)
Although many electric toothbrushes come with travel cases, some can still take up quite a bit of valuable space in your bag, especially if you’re travelling abroad and just have hand luggage. Step up the Fairywill FW-515. This skinny, lightweight brush comes with a cap for travelling and can be recharged via USB (though you should get a month’s worth of brushing from just a four-hour charge). There are three settings: “Clean” for standard toothbrushing, “Soft” if you have sensitive gums and “Massage” for a very gentle brushing.

The best for tech heads
Foreo Issa 2 (£149)
Not your ordinary-looking electric toothbrush, the Foreo Issa 2 is very distinctive with its silicone and PBT polymer body, brush head and bristles. The bristles, in theory, should harbour less bacteria than a standard toothbrush head, which can only be a good thing. With its futuristic look comes futuristic technology – you’ll only need to charge the battery once a year! Plus, with the new silicone bristles, the heads only need replacing every six months, double the lifespan of a standard brush head (as recommended by dentists).
