The best baking equipment for Great British Bake Off fans as the show returns to screens

Warm your ovens, folks, for next week a tiny slice of normality returns to our screens in the shape of the Great British Bake Off 2020.

Complete with Covid protocols, everyone's favourite TV fancy is back and bigger than ever.

And, if like most of us you spent lockdown perfecting your ganache, this new series is bound to inspire you to dust off that KitchenAid you spent all of your savings on back in May (and then used twice).

For if anything can inspire you to keep calm and carry on baking in the face of a seemingly neverending pandemic, it's 12 shiny new contestants and a snazzy new judge in the shape of Matt Lucas.

The show  - which usually starts in August - launches on September 22 having been delayed as the coronavirus pandemic put a stop to filming.

And if you want to be ready to emulate the baking stars of 2020 with a fluffy filo or a show stopping gingernut, you'll need a full range of equipment.

Luckily, Argos is ahead of the game, with a whole section of its website devoted to Bake Off enthusiasts.

The Go Get Baking section includes lists of essentials for achieving the perfect bake, as well as top tips for everyone from beginners to regulars.

With recipes supplied by Sainsbury's and lots of kitchen inspiration, the guides will help you navigate through the warm gooey forest of gateaux, fondants and blancmanges.

There's even a way to emulate the famous Bake Off tent, with Argos' own suggestion - which, Bake Off aside, might be a handy Covid-friendly addition to any Scottish garden as the weather turns.

Of course, there are plenty of gadgets too - with some surprisingly affordable aids for your baking bonanza.

The Kenwood by Mary Berry HM535 Hand Mixer in Cream, for example, is just £28.99, while you can protect your fingers from the heat of the competition with Argos Home Brights Double Oven Gloves, which are just £5.50.

If you're willing to splurge on some investment pieces, there's a gorgeous set of mixing bowls with lids from Fearne Cotton's Fearne by Swan at a pricey £55.

However there's a whole range of stunning Fearne by Swan products available, many of which are more pocket friendly - including this cute cake stand, and a teapot, sugar and creamer set (to enjoy your warm buns with).

Of course as a baking enthusiast's destination, Argos isn't the first retailer that springs to mind.

Experts are most likely to shop at  Hobbycraft, Nisbets, Procook and even Amazon for their more specific baking needs, including hard to find ingredients.

And with shortages of almost everything from yeast to baking tins during the height of the pandemic, it's reassuring that everything seems to be back in stock in time for the Bake Off flurry.

Judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood are of course back as the fonts of all baking knowledge, but host Noel Fielding will have a new partner this year, after Sandi Toksvig quit the show at the end of the 2019 series.

Brand new addition to the team Matt Lucas will no doubt bring even more punny humour to the show, as the contestants aim to hit the dizzy heights of Star Baker.

The Great British Bake Off returns on Channel 4 on September 22, 2020.
