The best April Fools' Day pranks of 2019

Every year April Fools’ Day brings out the joker in editors, press teams and marketing execs nationwide - and 2019 was no exception.

We’ve rounded up the best April Fools’ Day jokes from across the country.

The Metro reported that ‘straight white men’ were to be banned from the comment sections - a suggestion a few readers took a little too personally.

Over at Get Reading, they reported that Cow Lane in Reading would be closed to erect a statue of a councillor riding a bison.

While the British Transport Police announced plans to crack down on smelly foods on public transport, with a proposed £2,000 fine for those caught flagrantly breaking the rule.

Elsewhere, Primark revealed on their Instagram a new product line: sock vending machines, distributed all across London.

At Lancashire Live they reported the county’s beloved butter pies would be hit by a specific tax coming into force, raising the price by 20%.

It was also reported Britain was to be kicked out of Eurovision over Brexit in the Express.

The paper reported the chief executive of L’Institute de Eurovision Song (LIES) said: “It wouldn’t be fair on the other countries that Britain is still able to compete despite leaving the EU.”

Down in Cornwall it was reported by Cornwall Live that the Russian cargo ship, Kuzma Minin, which ran aground in Falmouth last year was to be turned into luxury student accommodation.

This piece was accompanied with a full artist’s impression of what the accommodation might look like.

At Tinder HQ they jumped the gun, announcing on March 29 the introduction of height verification, to stop people from misrepresenting themselves on the dating app.

While this was, of course, a joke - a fair few fell for it - leading the company to clarify, and use the clarification as an opportunity to talk about lying on Twitter.
