The best and worst-case scenarios for Leeds United's promotion hopes this weekend

The wait is almost over.

At 12.30pm on Saturday afternoon the Championship will return, 104 days after the final whistle went on Derby County's win over Blackburn Rovers way back in March.

English football - and indeed modern day society - has not had to contend with anything like the ongoing coronavirus pandemic before, but the return of football is a step in the right direction.

Leeds United are not in action until Sunday lunchtime when they visit Cardiff City in the final fixture of this first weekend back, which means that the league table could look very different when they take to the picth.

Here is a look at the key fixtures in the promotion race this weekend and the results that Leeds will be pulling for.

Fulham vs Brentford (Saturday, 12.30pm)

Back with a bang, eh?

Third play fourth in the first match back as two of the division's best attacking sides go toe-to-toe at an empty Craven Cottage.

The two teams met in December, where Brentford claimed a 1-0 win, but with just one win in their last five, the Bees are the more out-of-form side - assuming form carries over after this break.

Scott Parker's men sit seven points off leaders Leeds, with Brentford a further four points back, meaning a defeat for Thomas Frank's side will all-but end their slim hopes of catching the top two.

West Bromwich Albion vs Birmingham City (Saturday, 3pm)

Another big game for Leeds' closest challenges, as West Brom get back up and running with a local derby against Birmingham City.

The impact that a local derby being played without fans is another key talking point ahead of the return, but Slaven Bilic will no doubt have his players up for this one.

Birmingham sit 16th in the table, eight points clear of the drop zone, but will the motivation to derail a local rival be enough to conjure up a first win six matches?

Sheffield Wednesday vs Nottingham Forest (Saturday, 3pm)

Forest sit level on points with Brentford (60) at the restart, so know that there is virtually no room to drop points if they are to earn a top two spot.

Garry Monk's side sit 15th in the table and are another side who in theory have little to play for in these final few weeks - although the FA charge hanging over their head may yet come into play.

Luton Town vs Preston and Blackburn Rovers vs Bristol City (Saturday, 3pm)

Now it's down to the race for the final playoff place - teams that are not realistically looking at the top two. Preston were in a wretched run of from when the season was stopped, having lost four of their last five matches. They have a trip to relegation haunted Luton Town.

Bristol City's form was not much better, but draws in their last two games saw them close the gap to sixth place to just one point.

Best and worst case scenarios for Leeds United

When Leeds United kick off at 12noon on Sunday, it will be the final match of the weekend and they will know how the table will look.

The ideal situation sees West Brom go down to Birmingham City, while Fulham suffer a home defeat to Brentford.

While that would mean the Bees tales go up, it would open the door for Leeds to establish a four point lead at the top and move ten points clear of third place.

On the flipside, West Brom will move ahead of Leeds if they win or even draw on Saturday. Should Fulham claim all three points in the early Saturday game, they will be just four points off Leeds' total before the Whites kick off in south Wales.
