The best and worst case scenario for Chelsea and Frank Lampard as Champions League draw beckons

The draw for the Champions League group stage is nearly here.

Chelsea will be watching on with real interest as they find out the challenge that awaits them as they return to Europe's biggest stage.

The Blues missed out on the Champions League last term after finishing outside of the top four, however a productive season under Maurizio Sarri has seen them reclaim their spot.

Sarri's side finished the season by winning the Europa League and they'll have aspirations of reaching the latter rounds of the elite competition this time.

Here we take a look at the best and worst case scenarios for Frank Lampard's Chelsea side.

Pot one

Liverpool

Chelsea

Barcelona

Bayern Munich

Paris Saint-Germain

Manchester City

Juventus

Zenit St Petersburg

Chelsea cannot face any of the teams in pot one as they themselves are in it.

That means they avoid the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus in the group stage, although they can still be handed an extremely tough draw going on the teams in pot two.

Pot two

Real Madrid

Atletico Madrid

Borussia Dortmund

Napoli

Shakhtar Donetsk

Tottenham

Ajax

Benfica

There could be some interesting matches in here with the likes of Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Napoli all posing real tests.

Tottenham are the only team the Blues cannot face as rules states that you cannot play a team from the same country in either the group stage or the round of 16.

Pot three

Lyon

Leverkusen

Red Bull Salzburg

Olympiakos

Club Brugge

Valencia

Inter Milan

Dinamo Zagreb

Bayer Leverkusen, Red Bull Salzburg, Valencia and Inter Milan are joined by Lyon, Olympiakos, Club Brugge and Dinamo Zagreb who all came through their play-off ties.

There are some big teams in this pot as well, meaning that Chelsea will be undoubtedly face a big challenge.

Pot four

Lokomotiv Moscow

Red Star Belgrade

Genk

Galatasaray

Red Bull Leipzig

Slavia Prague

Atalanta

Lille

Chelsea will no doubt fancy their chances against most sides in pot four, especially if they're hoping to progress to the later rounds.

However with sides such as Lille, RB Leipzig and Galatasaray there's always a chance of an upset.

Best case scenario

Chelsea

Shakhtar Donetsk

RB Salzburg

Genk

The obvious choice for supporters from pot two would be Shakhtar Donetsk, thus avoiding two tough games against the likes of Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid or Napoli.

There are also some good teams in pot three and many will want to be drawn against RB Salzburg given the Blues beat them 5-3 in a pre-season friendly at the end of last month.

Then in pot four you're looking at Genk, Red Star Belgrade , Slavia Prague.

Worst case scenario

Chelsea

Real Madrid

Inter Milan

RB Leipzig

Real Madrid had a summer to forget but you still wouldn't want to be drawn against them in the group stage.

However, some may believe the teams are destined to be drawn together since Eden Hazard swapped Stamford Bridge for the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer.

Chelsea could also come up against another familiar face in the group stage as they could be drawn against Antonio Conte's Inter Milan from pot three.

In pot four, Atalanta or Red Bull Leipzig will more than likely be the teams all clubs want to avoid, although Lampard's side couldn't come up against the Italian said if the Nerazzurri are in their group.
