Champions League draw: Chelsea's best and worst case scenarios in the group stage

The Champions League group stage draw will take place in Nyon, Switzerland on Thursday.

And Chelsea know which teams they could come up against now after the play-off round was completed on Wednesday night.

The Blues will be in pot two for the draw, knowing they could have one of the big boys of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid or Juventus in the same group as them.

But they will avoid Barcelona, also in pot two, and the other English clubs, naturally.

Ahead of the draw, here is a look at who Chelsea could face and what the best and worst case scenarios would be.

Pot 1

Bayern Munich (Germany), Sevilla (Spain), Real Madrid (Spain), Liverpool (England), Juventus (Italy), Paris Saint-Germain (France), Zenit Saint-Petersburg (Russia), Porto (Portgual).

Pot 2

Barcelona (Spain), Atletico Madrid (Spain), Manchester City (England), Manchester United (England), Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine), Borussia Dortmund (German), Chelsea (England), Ajax (Netherlands).

Pot 3

Dynamo Kyiv (Ukraine), Salzburg (Austria), RB Leipzig (Germany), Inter Milan (Italy), Olympiacos (Greece), Lazio (Italy), Krasnodar (Russia), Atalanta (Italy).

Pot 4

Lokomotiv Moscow (Russia), Marseille (France), Club Brugge (Belgium), Borussia Monchengladbach (Germany), Istanbul Basaksehir (Turkey), FC Midtjylland (Denmark), Rennes (France), Ferencvaros (Hungary).

Best case scenario

Zenit Saint-Petersburg, Chelsea, Krasnodar, Ferencvaros

Zenit Saint-Petersburg are the lowest-ranked side in Pot 1 using UEFA’s club coefficient rankings, with their CC score of 64,000 being lower than that of every team in Pot 2, including Chelsea.

The Russian side have not got past the group stages of this competitions since the 2015-16 campaign, where they were beaten in the Round of 16 by Benfica. And if Chelsea were to get them, they could not be drawn against fellow Russian outfit Krasnodar, who would be the favourable side in pot three.

Instead, Olympiacos would likely be the best opponents to face. Atalanta are the club with the lowest coefficient ranking, but their run to the quarter-finals last season should be enough to scare Chelsea.

Then, in pot four, it's take your pick.

Midtjylland of Denmark or Ferencvaros of Hungary look the most favourbale draws, but Istanbul Basaksehir or Club Brugge would not be bad either.

Worst case scenario

Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Marseille

This group would really fit the ‘group of death’ cliché, which would pit the Blues against Champions League holders Bayern Munich, Italian giants Inter Milan and French side Marseille.

Bayern won the competition convincingly last season, with a memorable semi-final win over Barcelona and a Round of 16 triumph over Chelsea on their way to the final last season.

Inter Milan impressed in their first season under ex-Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, reaching the final of the Europa League, finishing runners-up in Serie A and getting to the semi-finals of Coppa Italia.

Marseille are no strangers to this competition and will drop down to Pot 4 if two of Red Bull Salzburg, Olympiacos and Krasnodar qualify from this week’s qualifying matches.

Marseille finished as runners-up in this competition in its first year under the Champions League format in 1993, although they have not gotten past the group stages since the 2011/12 season, where Chelsea went on to lift the trophy under Roberto Di Matteo.
