The best AirPods alternatives 2025: choice pairs reviewed by our experts

Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II and Apple AirPods Pro 2 side-by-side.

What does it take to be included on our list of the best AirPods alternatives? Well, we're looking for wireless earbuds that share similar features and functionality to Apple’s entire range of Apple AirPods. We are looking for the best products from rival brands that can take on the current AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation and AirPods Pro 2 at their respective price points.

Needless to say, all the products that make this list have been put through extensive testing by our review team. They all excel in the sound quality department but we also take into account a wide range of factors during testing, from comfort to battery life, and features to call quality.

We judge and reach our verdicts and star ratings on a performance-per-pound basis, so you’re also guaranteed you are getting the best value for money from the products we are recommending. You can read more about the review process in our how we test section further down the page.

Besides alternatives targeted at the AirPods currently on sale, we also have entry-level options that are cheaper and flagship alternatives that sit well above where Apple’s current range ends. There truly is something for everyone on this list.

With the recent arrival of Sony’s WF-C710N buds we have a new mid-price addition to the list this month, while the more premium Technics EAH-AZ100 have also joined them. These two pairs of AirPods alternatives have vastly different price tags, but both impressed our reviewers enough to earn five-star reviews.

1. Sony WF-1000XM5

What Hi-Fi? Awards winner. Sony's best AirPods alternatives to date.

Noise-cancelling: Yes | Bluetooth: SBC, AAC, LDAC | Battery life: 8hrs (24hrs with charging case) | Wireless charging: Yes | Waterproof: Water resistant | Finishes: Black, Silver

Class-leading levels of detail and clarity
Top-notch musicality and timing
Comfortable, discreet design
Some rivals produce more bass
Could feel more secure

The Sony WF-1000XM5 are a sensational pair of AirPods Pro 2 alternatives and the best wireless earbuds on the market right now.

They build on the huge success of the multi-award-winning WF-1000XM4 with improvements across the board. They are 20 per cent lighter and 25 per cent smaller than the XM4, with smoother lines and more subtle curves. The case is more compact, too.

Inside is a new 8.4mm Dynamic Driver X, which doesn’t sound quite as rich or full in the bass, but clarity and detail are class-leading, with top-notch musicality and timing.

The eight-hour battery life (with another 16 in the case) has more juice in the buds than the Apple AirPods Pro 2, and noise cancelling has been noticeably improved. They work seamlessly with both iOS and Android devices, too.

Throw in improved touch controls and a packed feature list that includes Multipoint Bluetooth, Adaptive Sound Control and Speak-to-Chat, and the WF-1000XM5 are difficult to fault.

2. Sony WF-C510

What Hi-Fi? Awards winner. Sony's no-frills buds are a great budget buy with impressive stamina.

Noise-cancelling: No | Bluetooth: AAC, SBC | Battery life: 11hrs (+10hrs from charging case) | Wireless charging: No | Waterproof: IPX4 | Finishes: Blue, Yellow, Black, White

Compact and comfortable design
Solid, musical sound
11hr battery life
Build looks and feels cheap
Ambient sound mode is only okay

If you’re in the market for a new pair of in-ear headphones you can be fairly sure Sony has something for you. If it’s battery life you’re after at a wallet-friendly price, the WF-C510 is that something.

A replacement for the WF-C500 that used to inhabit this slot in our selection, the C510 pick up where their predecessors left off, promising a slightly longer 11 hours of battery life in the buds, and another 11 in the case. You’ll get less unless you turn off all the audio processing but there’s still plenty for even the longest listening sessions.

As Sony’s most affordable true wireless earbuds there are no frills here, and the finish on both the buds and the case actually feels like a downgrade from the WF-C500, but it’s not completely back to basics when it comes to features. You get IPX4 water resistance, Multipoint Bluetooth and despite the lack of noise-cancelling there’s also an Ambient Sound Mode, which lets you hear some of what’s going on around you.

A pair of earbuds at this price is never going to be the last word on sound quality, but the WF-C510 are richer and more full-bodied than the C500. What they lack in detail and dexterity they make up for in fun and enthusiasm, which makes them an engaging enough listen considering the cost.

Our reviewer also found them to be comfortable and easy to wear, with responsive controls and compact dimensions, making the WF-C510 a bit of a bargain.

The best cheap AirPods alternatives

3. Earfun Air

Excellent AirPods 4 alternatives at a fraction of the price.

Noise-cancelling: No | Bluetooth: AAC, SBC | Battery life: 7hrs (+28hrs from charging case) | Wireless charging: Yes | Waterproof: Yes | Finishes: Black, White, Red

Punchy, expansive sound
Great feature set
Classy build and finish
Treble needs more refinement

Earfun isn't one of the first brands that spring to mind when researching AirPods alternatives, but the Earfun Airs could change that. These buds are ridiculously cheap and they sound wonderfully cheerful too.

Noise isolation is excellent (if you want noise-cancelling you will need the Pro version) and these attractive earbuds feel comfy too. They are IPX7 certified (i.e. waterproof), support virtual assistants and include Qi wireless charging if you own a suitable charger.

Battery life is seven hours from the buds and a further 28 hours from the charging case. Amazingly it all feels fairly premium too. The Bluetooth 5.0 connection is solid and stable and for the money, calls sound clear, and the earbuds offer an energetic and spacious sound.

If you’re after something fun-sounding and a cheap pair of AirPods alternatives, the Earfun Air are just the ticket.

4. Sony WF-C710N

These superb Sonys are great alternatives to the standard AirPods 2 and 3.

Noise-cancelling: Yes | Bluetooth: AAC, SBC | Battery life: 8.5 hours (BT + ANC), 30 hours (including charging case) | Wireless charging: No | Waterproof: IPX4 | Finishes: x 4 (Glass Blue, Pink, White, Black)

Fulsome, controlled bass
Great sense of musicality
Clear, detailed and dynamic with it
Improved ANC compared to the previous model
Case and earbuds are bulkier than before
No aptX or LDAC support
Controls could be more customisable

No matter how much money you have to spend on your AirPods alternatives, Sony has a pair to fit the bill – and the mid-price tier is no different. The Sony WF-C710N are brilliantly capable, entirely comfortable and eminently affordable.

The buds are noticeably chunkier than their Award-winning predecessors, as is the case, but we love the new transparent Glass Blue finish that’s available alongside the more traditional pink, white and black.

What made the C700N so brilliant was the way they combined a strong set of features with similarly impressive performance, and the C710N follow the same recipe. There’s still no aptX or LDAC support, but you do get SBC and AAC, multipoint Bluetooth, wear detection, and a Quick Attention transparency mode that’s not quite quick enough to respond. The buds are also rated IPX4.

From a performance point of view Sony has managed to squeeze even more out of the C710N. There’s a great sense of musicality, but they’re also clear, detailed and dynamic, with solid and weighty bass.

The same is true of the C710N’s noise-cancelling performance. The addition of Sony’s Dual Noise Sensor filters has upped the intensity slightly and they’re capable of removing more noise than before. It’s particularly noticeable with the lower-mid and bass frequencies.

We’d like the touch controls to be a bit more customisable, but this is still a seriously impressive pair of buds for a very affordable price.

5. Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds

The best AirPods Pro 2 alternatives if noise-cancelling is top of your wish list.

Noise-cancelling: Yes | Bluetooth: AAC, SBC | Battery life: 6hrs (+18hrs from charging case) | Wireless charging: No | Waterproof: Yes | Finishes: Black, White Smoke

Punchy, musical sound
Solid, weighty bass
Excellent ANC
Comfortable
Immersive Audio slashes battery life
No Bluetooth multipoint
No wireless charging

We all know Bose knows how to make a great pair of wireless headphones and the QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds have to be considered its finest wireless earbuds to date.

The Ultra provide a comfortable fit and lots of features. Bluetooth 5.3 is a big bonus, while they are also Bose's first in-ears to offer its very own spatial audio tech, Immersive Audio.

The Bose app allows you to alter the amount of noise-cancelling on offer via a number of customisable presets and, speaking of noise-cancelling, the new Bose are still at the top of their game. They can automatically adjust the amount of ANC on offer so your music isn’t drowned out by particularly loud noises. The effect is deeply impressive and the ANC is even better than that of the AirPods Pro 2. As for sound, it is balanced and neutral and overflowing with fine detail. Call quality is good for the money too.

It's a shame there is no support for high-quality wireless audio codecs such as LDAC or aptX HD, nor is there wireless charging or Bluetooth multipoint (both of which the Sony WF-1000XM5 cater for). But we don't think this is the end of the world when you consider that these classy buds ooze such sophistication.

The best AirPods alternatives for running

6. JBL Live Pro 2 TWS

These entertaining AirPods rivals are a great shout if you want a pair for exercise.

OS support: Android/iOS | Bluetooth version: 5.2 | Noise-cancelling: Yes | Battery life: 8hrs (30hrs with charging case) | Waterproof rating: IPX5 | Weight: 4.8g per bud

Punchy, lively sound
Solid, meaty bass
User-friendly app and set-up
No aptX HD or LDAC
Control customisation could be better
Only three ear tip choices

The best AirPods for exercise, in our opinion, are the AirPods Pro 2, which promote a more stable and comfortable fit than the standard AirPods and also have ANC so you can mute the noise from an overcrowded gym.

But they do sit at the pricier end of the scale, which is why we have included the JBL Live Pro 2 TWS in this list. They are more affordable than the AirPods Pro 2 but still offer a five-star performance, great comfort and a highly competitive and useful range of features.

They boast a solid build and good looks for the money. Extras such as wireless charging, IPX5 water-resistance (most pairs are IPX4), and Bluetooth Multipoint (which lets you seamlessly switch between two simultaneously connected devices) are a cut above what many rivals offer at the money. Add the 30 hours of total battery life (including eight hours per charge) and the JBL suddenly appear a very tempting option.

The noise-cancelling is good enough to dampen outside interference, while the transparency mode comes in handy for running. And sound quality is entertaining to boot. What more could you wish for at the money?

7. Bowers & Wilkins Pi8

What Hi-Fi? Awards winner. These Bowers & Wilkins earbuds are pricier than the AirPods Pro 2 but they more than jutify the extra cost.

Noise cancelling : Yes | Bluetooth : 5.4 | Battery life : 6.5 hours (buds), 20 hours (case) | Wireless charging : Yes | Waterproof : IP54 | Finishes : 4 (Anthracite Black, Dove White, Midnight Blue, Jade Green)

Sensational levels of detail
Natural, refined sound
Easy to use
Competitive ANC
Call quality could be improved
No ear tip fit test
A couple of signal dropouts

Bowers & Wilkins isn’t new to the world of wireless earbuds but its past efforts haven’t quite hit the spot. However, all that has changed with the arrival of its latest flagship pair.

If you want lashings of detail and insight from your wireless earbuds, the Pi8 have to be heard to be believed. During testing, our review team found that their ability to drag subtlety and nuance out of recordings was hugely impressive. You won’t find a more detailed-sounding pair of earbuds on this list. They are also dynamic and rhythmic too, capable of keeping you entertained no matter what musical genre you feed them. The earbuds use a carbon cone driver which is the same material used in its five-star PX8 wireless headphones and it works wonders in the Pi8.

As you’d expect from premium wireless earbuds, build quality and comfort are excellent. The plastics feel of high quality whether you’re talking about the wireless charging case or the earbuds themselves. The case actually doubles as a wireless audio re-transmitter which means you can use it on, say, a plane where you want to beam the audio from your seat's infotainment system to the earbuds but the plane’s system doesn’t support Bluetooth.

Their active noise-cancelling is great at blocking out low-frequency rumbles and commotion, even if it isn’t quite as accomplished as that offered by the Bose QC Ultra Earbuds which you’ll also find on this list. We think the Bose cancel out a greater selection of high frequencies. Battery life is a solid, but not spectacular, six-and-a-half hours per charge, while call quality is good enough at this level to compete with key rivals.

8. Technics EAH-AZ100

These friendly, well-thought-out buds are a great alternative to the AirPods Pro 2

Noise-cancelling: Yes | Bluetooth: LDAC, SBC, AAC, LC3 | Battery life: Up to 10 hours (with ANC on); 28 hours (with charging case) | Wireless charging: Yes | Waterproof: IPX4 | Finishes: x2 (Black, Silver)

Superb detail and clarity
Expressive, spacious and engaging sound
Excellent noise-cancelling
Comfortable design
Ample customisable features
Voice Focus AI call feature makes us sound robotic
Strong competition

Technics might be most famous for its legendary DJ-friendly turntables, but if you can’t quite stretch to the Bowers & Wilkins Pi8 above, the Technics EAH-AZ100 are a superb pair of premium AirPods alternatives.

You only have to look at the long list of pros on our five-star review to understand why we’ve chosen them as our best premium option. The EAH-AZ100 have a classy look and feel that’s matched by a comfortable fit and plenty of customisable features. We were particularly impressed by the reliability of the Bluetooth connection and the three-way multipoint connectivity, although the Voice Focus AI call feature isn’t such a winner.

When it comes to audio performance, though, the EAH-AZ100 are an unqualified success. Put them in your ears and you’ll immediately be struck by their clear and detailed sound that accommodates every nuance of a recording. They’re livelier and more confident than their four-star predecessors, but they’re also impressively even-handed. Support for LDAC and LC3 certainly helps, but in all honesty they put on an enjoyable performance no matter the codec or source.

When it comes to noise-cancelling they’re similarly accomplished. The intensity of the ANC is customisable, but on full power it does a tremendous job of muffling the world around you and comes close to matching the class-leading performance you get from the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds.

After an extended run of four-star reviews for its true wireless earbuds, the EAH-AZ100 finally earned Technics that elusive extra star – and a well-deserved spot as our favourite pair of premium AirPods alternatives.

Also consider

Looking for something different? Here are other AirPods alternatives you might want to consider. Some are five-star products that just missed out on the main list. Others might be four-star products that excel in some areas and could be worth shortlisting.

Sony WF-C700N: With their successors now on the scene, Sony’s Award-winning mid-range buds are currently available at a low-end price. Offering brilliant sound and solid noise-cancelling they were already excellent value, so the discount makes them even better if you’re on a tight budget.

Cambridge Audio Melomania M100: They're not perfect, but the M100 offer a range of AirPods Pro 2-rivalling features and superior battery life. We're talking a massive ten hours per charge and 16 if you turn noise-cancelling off. They sound spacious and balanced and their ANC is more than good enough at the money. We'd just like them to sound more dynamic and engaging and their Transparency mode could be much better.

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4: If you want another alternative to the Bose QC Ultra and Sony WF-1000XM5 which feature on this list, Sennheiser also has a premium pair that fits the bill and is a step up from the AirPods Pro 2. They sound rich and engaging, are comfortable and nice to use and offer plenty of customisation options. Noise-cancelling is competitive too, although Bose just edges it in this department.

Google Pixel Buds A-Series: If you're an Android or Google Pixel phone owner, then chances are AirPods aren't on your wishlist. If you want an equivalent pair designed with Google's rival ecosystem in mind, then the Pixel Buds A-Series make a lot of sense. They're comfortable, easy to use, sound detailed and musical, and pair easily with Android devices.

Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 Pro: Samsung's latest premium buds performed well for the money although they haven't made the top list. They are a good shout for Samsung Galaxy smartphone users, though, and are packed with features including ANC, spatial audio, and seven-hour battery life. They produce a bright and lively sound although it could prove too forward for some.

How to choose the best AirPods alternatives for you

Firstly, you need to decide which AirPods you want an alternative for. Is it the affordable, entry-level AirPods (2019), the AirPods 3 or the most recent AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation? Or, perhaps you want a pair of AirPods Pro 2 alternatives that bring active noise-cancelling to the party?

Are you someone who is already immersed in the Apple ecosystem but who doesn't want to be tied down when it comes to your headphone choice? Or, perhaps you're an Android user, who simply likes the idea of having AirPods-rivalling features in their pair of wireless in-ears.

Obviously, you need to settle on a budget when considering AirPods alternatives. The good news here is that there are some great cheap options at the budget end of the market and there are also more premium alternatives should your bank account be able to stretch to that.

You will also want to compare battery life to make sure the earbuds you are considering can cope with the length of your commute as well as longer listening sessions.

You can now get plenty of bang for your buck where the best cheap wireless earbuds are concerned, and given Apple products all tend to demand a slight price premium, there are some great bargains to be had.

On this page, we have restricted our AirPods alternatives to the in-ear variety but we do also have a page dedicated to the very best AirPods Max alternatives should you want an over-ear option.

How we test AirPods alternatives

We test AirPods alternatives just like we test any pair of wireless earbuds. Before we put them in place we also experiment with any tips and check out how comfortable they are to wear.

We start with a full charge and see how accurate battery life claims are and just how it has drained during day-to-day use.

Although we have dedicated testing facilities in London and Reading, the bulk of our wireless earbuds testing happens outside those facilities, whether that's on the street or in our busy office.

It's only when nailing down the finer details of audio quality that we head for quieter environments where we compare the AirPods alternatives we are testing to price-comparable models. This gives us the chance to come to solid conclusions and peg each pair on sound quality.

As part of this testing process we will also compare them to their AirPods equivalents so we know where they sit in terms of quality and can judge whether or not we would be happy to use them and potentially add them to this list.

For ANC testing we venture outside to put those noise-cancelling algorithms through their paces and we also test the call quality of the earbuds at this stage too.

All our review verdicts are agreed upon by the team rather than an individual reviewer to eliminate any personal preference and to make sure we are being as thorough as possible, too. There is no input from PR companies or our sales team when it comes to the verdict, with What Hi-Fi? proud of having delivered honest, unbiased reviews for decades.

FAQ
