England manager Gareth Southgate has confirmed Ben Chilwell suffered a back injury during the loss to Belgium.
The Chelsea left-back had to be substituted during the first half of England's 2-0 Nations League defeat to the Red Devils on Sunday.
The 23-year-old, who has had an impressive start to the season for both club and country, was seen lying on the ground in pain before being replaced by Bukayo Saka in the 38th minute.
Southgate confirmed the nature of the injury but it is not clear if the former Leicester defender will recover in time for England's Nations League match against Iceland or Wednesday or for Chelsea's away game versus Newcastle on Saturday.
After the game, Southgate said: “He had some sort of issue with his back. He didn’t feel he could carry on.
"Outside of that I can’t give you any detail at the moment."
The Daily Telegraph’s Matt Law tweeted that the injury to Chilwell, who has previously been troubled by a foot injury, may not be that severe.
Chelsea will assess Chilwell's fitness over the coming days ahead of their trip to St James' Park on Saturday.
Blues boss Frank Lampard may be tempted to start with Cesar Azpilicueta or Emerson Palmieri if Chilwell fails to recover in time.
Chelsea lost their previous meeting with Steve Bruce's men after falling to a 1-0 away defeat in January.
Lampard's side are one of the form teams in the division and sit fifth in the table, whereas Newcastle are down in 13th.
But a win for the hosts will take them within one point of Chelsea, but a win for the visitors will see them go top for a matter of hours at the least.
This will be their 168th meeting, with Chelsea winning 74, losing 54, and drawing 39.
