The behind-the-scenes exchange that was Angus Kinnear's lowest moment in Derby play-off defeat

Remember what it felt like to lose to Derby County in the second leg of the play off semi final after having been 1-0 up after the first leg? Can you imagine having to hand a box of tickets for the play off final over to your rivals while the feelings were still so raw?

That's exactly what Leeds United managing director Angus Kinnear had to do on May 15 after Leeds crashed out of the play offs losing 3-4 on aggregate.

Four months on, he shared his story with the Talking Shutt podcast as part of the club's official link up with the fan podcast and explained how the management team felt.

"It was tough," Kinnear said. "We haven't been there as long as the fans and we won't pretend to feel it like the fans but we worked day and night to try and make the club great again and to miss out by such a small margin was pretty devastating.

"We've got a team of fantastic staff both at Thorp Arch and at Elland Road who work harder than they should for what they're paid. They're loyal, they're committed and to see their disappointment as well was tough."

But, for Kinnear, the lowest moment came after the game was finished.

He said: "Before the second leg of the play off semi final, the EFL send all the tickets to the final to the team who play in the second leg so we had 60,000 tickets and we box them and count them - well 40,000 - on the basis that one of the teams is going to go through and sell them so we were all ready, we were very confident, we were 1-0 up.

"After the game and after all the disappointment we had to box up the tickets and personally hand them over to the managing director of Derby and that's pretty heartbreaking so that's about as low as it gets."

However, the story ends on a positive note as Kinnear explained that everyone was able to channel that feeling of disappointment and turn it into something that is standing them in good stead this season.

"Everyone around the club just looked at each other and said we need to remember how we feel at the moment and make sure that it doesn't happen again and that started in the dressing room. Everyone wanted to take that moment and said we cannot let this happen again so whilst it was a horrendous night, very quickly I felt there was a new-found resolve and even more determination to get it right this year."

Hostilities resume this weekend as Derby County visit Elland Road on Saturday for the first time since that fateful day four months ago. The game kicks off at 12.30pm.
