The beauty spot where police are having to keep turning large groups away has been damaged in an arson attack

A beauty spot in Wales was deliberately set ablaze, police officers have said.

The forest area surrounding Blue Lagoon near Abertillery is thought to have been set on fire deliberately.

Officers from Gwent Police tweeted to say: "Very disappointing yesterday that as people were leaving the Blue Lagoon someone deliberately attempted to set the forestry on fire potentially endangering the lives of many.

"Arson will not be tolerated."

They added: "If you are caught you will prosecuted."

A spokesman for Gwent Police said: "We received a report of a fire near to Blaen-y-Cwm Road, Abertillery at around 5.30pm on Sunday, May 31.

"A parcel of land was reported as deliberately set on fire, close to the Blaencuffin canyon, while a number of people were present at the location.

"Officers attended to make the area safe for the members of the public at the site and to support the personnel from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service."

This is what the beauty spot usually looks like:

A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue said: " At approximately 5.38pm on Sunday, May 31, 2020, we received reports of a grass fire in Brynithel, Abertillery.

"Crews from Abertillery attended the scene and extinguished the fire.

"The supposed cause has been deemed as deliberate."

It comes after police found large groups using the hidden Welsh beauty spot for day trips during lockdown, as 40 cars turned up over a sunny weekend in April.

The picturesque area, also known as Blaencuffin Canyon, saw people travel from Cardiff, Bristol and Somerset.
