The beautiful Alps, with a dose of slapstick

A good comedy is a sure-fire way to uplift a person's spirits.

With that said, the free screening of the Italian flick The Chair Of Happiness (La Sedia Della Felicita), with English subtitles, promises good rollicking fun.

The movie, directed by Carlo Mazzacurati, will be shown on Saturday, May 25, at 4pm at RCB Forum screening room on the 2nd floor of the River City Bangkok.

The Chair Of Happiness is the second movie, in the RCB Film Club's 2019 Film Series. It has the perfect mix of comedy and mystery to keep the audiences on the edge of their seats. Best put, it's an amalgam of mystery, suspense, romance and emotion, topped up with a good dose of laughs.

The slew of colourful characters brought together in this movie add to the suspense. Worth mentioning include a tattoo artist and spa therapist, a psychic medium, greedy priest, wild magician, Chinese restaurateur, and an Indian assistant.

The movie has an arresting beginning, with the tattoo artist Dino creating a dolphin on a fishmonger's back. He then encounters and becomes smitten by his pretty, lively neighbour Bruna, a beauty therapist.

After that, his life is never the same. And neither is hers, especially after she is told (by a lady mafia-don, serving a sentence in prison) of a chair that contains a hidden treasure. Needless to say Bruna is determined to hunt for it, and he offers his support. The task is anything but smooth sailing for the couple when they learn that there are eight identical chairs.

The rest of the film indulges the audience with the couple's adventures to retrieve the lost treasure. In the course of the search, they are taken to beautiful and bizarre places, from lagoons and hills, to abandoned homes and crowded museums.

Along this journey, they encounter a wide range of eccentric personalities -- and animals including wild boars. The final scene is shot in the gorgeous Alps, and turns out to be intensely beautiful yet comical.

In short, it is a surreal drama of fun, fantasy and high spirits.

This is the last movie of Mazzacurati, who made 23 films in his lifetime. He died before the release of this movie. The film premiered at the Torino Festival, won various local awards, and was a hit with international audiences.
