‘The beating around the bush’: L.A. woman goes out with 38-year-old man who ‘runs his own business.’ Then she finds out what he really does for a living

A Los Angeles-based influencer says she was impressed by her 38-year-old date when he revealed that he started his own business. However, she discovers that isn’t the full truth after a few pointed questions.

In a video with over 50,000 views, TikToker Claire Almond (@clairealmondd) sits in her car as she tells viewers about the date she went on last week.

“He kept telling me that he ran a business. I was kind of impressed at the beginning. And he kept saying that,” she explains. “He really has something going for him.”

Then, she decided to ask him more about his business later in the date.

Did her date actually run his own business?

“I was like, ‘Tell me about your business,'” she recounts. “After a lot of beating around the bush, I learn that he [does] not run or own his own business…”

Almond explains that her date eventually admits to working as a manager at a dispensary in Los Angeles.

“The deceitfulness. The beating around the bush. In what world is that running your own business?” she asks.

She says she was shocked and didn’t know how to respond to his admission.

Her date may not be the only one to lie about his career. According to one study shared by the Mirror UK, around 29% of men lie about their wealth on the first date.

What did viewers think of her date’s lie?

In the comments of her TikTok, viewers share how to sniff out a lie on a first date.

“Nobody who has a sizable business ever brags about it or tells anyone on the first date,” one suggests.

“Usually running several businesses simultaneously, & have never mentioned them on a date. Never mix business/money with personal pursuits!” another says.

“When someone tells me they are the CEO, I automatically call BS in my head,” a third adds.

Some question if the TikToker would still be interested if her date hadn’t tried to lie about his career.

“The funny thing is, if he had just been honest and said that it would never been an issue I don’t think,” a viewer suggests.

“The sad thing is it wouldn’t be a problem if he was just honest,” a second says.

“So the real question is if he was honest from the beginning, would you have still had interest lol,” another asks.

Others joke about how they would characterize their jobs on a first date if they wanted to seem more impressive.

“I’m an Independent Culinary Logistics Coordinator (DoorDash driver),” a commenter says.

“‘I’m a petroleum transportation scientist’ works at a gas station,” another writes.

“He’s also the commissioner of his own football league. (fantasy),” a third viewer jokes.

“DoorDash is a 1099 sooo technically,” a fourth adds.
