The Bears have started 37 quarterbacks since winning Super Bowl XX

Mitchell Trubisky is the latest in a long line of quarterbacks who have failed to lead the Chicago Bears to a Super Bowl victory since Jim McMahon led the team to victory in 1986. A look at the long and mediocre list that has followed the colorful former BYU star.

Mike Tomczak

Mike Tomczak played six seasons with the Bears and appeared in 77 games. He was 21-10 as a starter. His best season was 1986 when he was 7-0.

Steve Fuller played college ball at Clemson. He actually started five games in the 1985 championship season for Chicago, going 4-1. The loss was the Bears’ only one in that great run. Overall, he was 6-5 as a starter for Chicago.

Yes, that Doug Flutie. The Boston College great played in five games with the Bears, going 1-0 as a starter. Overall, he completed 23-of-46 passes for  361 yards and three TDs.

Mike Hohensee

Mike Hohensee started two games in 1987 and won them both. The former Minnesota college star threw four TD passes against a pick.

Steve Bradley

Steve Bradley was 0-1 in 1987. He was 6-for-18 with 77 yards passing with two TDs and three picks.

Jim Harbaugh

Jim Harbaugh played seven seasons with the Bears out of Michigan. The current Wolverines coach was 35-30 as a starter and overall threw for 11,567 yards with 50 TD passes and 56 INTs.

Peter Tom Willis

Florida State’s Peter Tom Willis played with the Bears for four seasons and was winless in four starts. He threw six TD passes against 15 picks in his Bear career.

Virginia Tech’s Will Furrer played in two games as a Bear, losing his lone start. He threw three picks and zero TD passes.

Steve Walsh

Steve Walsh famously was chosen by the Dallas Cowboys — in a supplemental draft — the same year they chose Troy Aikman in the regular draft. He went on to a journeyman career. Walsh, who starred at Miami (Fl), spent two seasons with Chicago and went 8-3 as a starter.

Erik Kramer played five seasons with Chicago, going 18-28 as a starter. The former NC State quarterback threw for more than 10,000 yards as a Bear.

Dave Krieg

Dave Krieg is best known for his many years in Seattle. As a Bear, he went 6-6 as a starter in 1996. Krieg threw for 2,278 yards, 14 TDs and 12 picks.

Rick Mirer

Rick Mirer was a Golden Boy from Notre Dame, who became an NFL journeyman. Mirer played in seven games in 1997 for Chicago, going 0-3 as a starter.

Florida’s Shane Matthews spent four years in Chicago. He threw 19 TD passes and 18 picks while appearing in 20 games and going 8-7 as a starter.

Rex Grossman was a punch line for so many jokes during his NFL career. The former Florida Gator spent six years in Chicago, going 19-12 as a starter. He threw for 6,164 yards as a Bear.

The Bears moved all sorts of picks to soar up in the draft and grab Mitchell Trubisky from UNC. Thus far, the results have been disappointing. He is 18-15 as a starter and now wants TVs turned off at Halas Hall to avoid the nonstop criticism from media.

The decision to draft Mitchell Trubisky was stunning because the Bears had just given  Mike Glennon a massive free-agent deal. Glennon was 1-3 in four starts in 2017 before moving on to Arizona.

And to complete the current journeyman juggernaut, Missouri’s Chase Daniel has started games in 2019 with Trubisky injured. Overall, Daniel has gone 1-2 as a starter since joining the team last season.
