The Chicago Bears added to their busy weekend of transactions on Sunday when they signed veteran tight end Jesse James to a one-year deal, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
James is entering his seventh season in the NFL, drafted in 2015 by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He became a key weapon for Steelers’ quarterback Ben Roethlisberger from 2016-2018 when he caught 112 passes for 1,113 yards and eight touchdowns during that span.
He joined the Detroit Lions in 2019 on a four-year deal worth $22.6 million. After two seasons with Detroit, James was released earlier this offseason.

The veteran pass catcher, who has played in every regular season game since the start of the 2016 season, joins a tight end group in Chicago led by Jimmy Graham and Cole Kmet. James will likely compete for a roster spot with players like J.P. Holtz and Jake Butt, who also signed with the Bears in June.
Training camp has already begun for rookies and quarterbacks as they reported to Halas Hall this weekend, but James and the rest of the veterans will arrive on Tuesday.
