'The Battle of England' How the Australian media are reporting on Leeds United's visit

The upcoming friendly match between Leeds United and Manchester United has plenty of people talking.

Matt Tinney, the Perth correspondent from Australia’s most popular breakfast show Sun Rise On 7, has given a report looking ahead to the match in which more than 50,000 fans are expected to pack out the Optus Stadium.

“This is one of the biggest rivalries in English football, of all time,” said reporter Elle Georgiou.

“In fact, it goes back one hundred years, and tonight it all comes to a head here at our very own Optus Stadium when Leeds United and Manchester United face off.”

The match against Manchester United kicks off at 7pm local time, which is 12 noon in the UK.

The two sides last met in a League Cup clash in 2011, in which Sir Alex Ferguson’s side ran out 3-0 winners. The match was notable for Paul Pogba’s first senior appearance for the club, one of a small handful before he left for Juventus.

Meanwhile, local news outlet Perth Now has reported on the “amazing reception” that the Leeds players received as hundreds of fans queued to take photos with them.

“Their fans sing ‘We’re not famous anymore’ but Leeds United still have some serious pulling power,” they reported. “As shown half a world away from their home in the UK.”
