The Batman release date delayed until 2022 due to coronavirus pandemic

The release of The Batman has been delayed until 2022 - meaning Scots will have to wait longer until they can see the Caped Crusader take to the streets of Glasgow on the big screen.

Warner Bros had been hoping to release the film, starring Robert Pattinson, on October 1, 2021.

But it will now come to Scots cinemas on March 4, 2022 as the coronavirus pandemic continues to wreak havoc on the film industry.

The news will be a blow to comic book fans eager to see the DC hero take down villain in Scotland’s biggest city.

Producers of The Batman started filming around the city earlier this year.

The cast and crew were spotted shooting around the Necropolis and Glasgow Royal Infirmary in February.

But filming was brought to a halt shortly after as Covid-19 continued to sweep around the globe.

Filming resumed in the UK in September, but it was shut down again for two weeks after a member of production - widely reported to be Pattinson - tested positive for coronavirus.

Scots were given their first glimpse of how Glasgow had been transformed into the famous Gotham City when the film’s first trailer was released in August.

The Batman is the latest in a number of big name films to be delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Warner Bros also announced that sci-fi film Dune will now open in October 2021 instead of the original December 2020 release date.

Cineworld announced that it would temporarily close all of its cinemas in the UK and US due to a lack of new blockbuster releases.

Around 45,000 employees will be affected as a result.
