The Bank Tavern's Sunday roast is so popular it's got no tables free until August 2021

It would be fair to say it's been a good year for The Bank Tavern.

The pub's roast dinner has long been regarded as one of the best in Bristol, but in October it received national acclaim when it was hailed as the best in the UK by The Observer Food Monthly.

The traditional city centre boozer was voted number one by readers of the publication and received the award at a ceremony in London on October 17.

This recognition has only added to the demand to try the Sunday dinner, with people far and wide eager to book in a sitting at the pub, which is tucked away down John Street.

There was already a lengthy wait for one of the seven tables but hopeful diners are now looking at a staggering wait of 19 months to dine at the pub on a Sunday afternoon.

The next available Sunday sitting is now on August 1, 2021 - but its landlord says there is a way you might be able to get a table.

With the option of a high-quality main course for less than a tenner or three courses for just £14.95, it's no wonder there's such interest.

Options include rare topside of beef, slow roasted pork shoulder, roasted free range chicken leg or vegetable and lentil loaf, served with carrots, parsnip puree and a Yorkshire pudding.

Sunday lunches at the Bank Tavern are served between midday and 4pm.

Tip for booking

If you're one of the many people who has been left aghast when trying to book The Bank Tavern's roast dinner, the pub's owner Sam Gregory has a top tip for you.

He said: "Everyone who books gets sent an email reminder a few days before their visit.

"If they can no longer make their booking, there's an option in the email for them to say this, which then updates the booking website.

"This will in turn free up space, so my advice to people would be to check the booking system regularly to check if there's been a cancellation."

Sam added that the team at the pub were "very chuffed" to be crowned best Sunday roast in the UK by The Observer, which has resulted in "even more interest".
