The balmy forecast for Wales this weekend as above-average temperatures continue

More warm weather is forecast for Wales this weekend as the country's sunny September comes to a close.

Average temperatures for September have this year been warmer than August with Wales basking in an 'Indian summer', a name often used to describe a warm, calm spell of weather that occurs in autumn.

And it looks like the warm spell is set to continue with temperatures of 21°C expected for this weekend. The average maximum temperature in Wales in September is 17.5°C, according to the Met Office, with temperatures usually getting colder towards the end of the month.

The Met Office forecasts temperatures to rise to 21°C in parts of Wales on Friday September 24 with the majority of the country expected to bask in 20°C.

However, while the warm weather will be welcomed, it is expected to be largely cloudy as the month comes to a close with showers also predicted.

The Met Office forecast for Wales predicts a cloudy weekend with patches of sunshine on Friday and Saturday before rain arrives on Sunday.

Despite the rain, temperatures are expected to reach 20°C in Cardiff on Sunday September 26, as it will in Aberystwyth and Monmouth.

Swansea will be cooler at 19°C as will St Davids in the west of the country.

The Met office forecast for this weekend, between Friday September 24 and Sunday September 26 says: "Staying cloudy with patchy light rain on Friday and Saturday, with winds easing through Friday. Sunny spells and showers Sunday, heavy at times in the east. Feeling quite warm throughout."

The long range forecast until October 5 predicts a return to usual Autumn climate: "Still fine and warm for many on Sunday though likely turning more unsettled as outbreaks of rain and strong winds move erratically southeast across the country during Sunday and Monday.

"Through the next week and into October, generally unsettled conditions are set to continue across the UK. A very general northwest to southeast split to our weather is likely to continue. Showers and long spells of rain are expected towards northern areas with the southeast seeing drier and sunnier weather.

"However, unsettled weather could still spread across the south with outbreaks of rain, which could be heavy at times. Temperatures are most likely near average but may slightly rise towards the end of this period."

Average temperatures for September have this year been warmer than August. Currently the warmest recorded temperatures in the UK in October and November are 29.9 °C on October 1, 2011, in Gravesend, Kent, and 22.4 °C on November 1, 2015, at Trawsgoed, Ceredigion.

As we enter mid October, the temperature is expected to be around or above average.
