The Backyard Bikeshop wins national award after move to Gateshead Quayside

An independent bike shop in Gateshead has been named as the best in the country at a national award ceremony.

The Backyard Bikeshop has been named as the Best Independent Bike Dealer at the National BikeBiz Awards, which was held at the NEC Cycle Show in Birmingham.

The shop is located on Hillgate Quays in Gateshead and forms part of By the River Brew Co’s container community, which opened in June last year, which also features the much-lauded Trakol restaurant.

The business offers its customers access to high-end customer build road bikes but also houses a full-service workshop at the quayside site.

Owner Nic Veiri, who accepted the award, said: “To win this award after such a relatively short time in operation is incredible and a testament to our team’s ethos here at Backyard Bikeshop.

"For us it is a pleasure to be of service to the North East’s Cycling community as we live, breath and dream bikes.”

As well as offering cycle repairs the shop also serves brunch overlooking the Tyne and becomes a cocktail bar at the weekend.

Before moving to the Quayside last year The Backyard Bikeshop had been located at the Ouseburn in Newcastle.
