The Ayrshire outdoor pool of yesteryear that's become an online sensation

A new book which chronicles the history of the old outdoor swimming pool in Troon is due to be released.

A document packed with stories and photographs and can currently be viewed on the Old Troon Facebook page.

Due to its popularity, though, an A4 book with more than 150 pictures will now be published in a physical form for anyone to enjoy.

So far, the book has had interest from readers as far afield as Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

The pool opened in 1931 and closed in 1981 and was enjoyed by countless people back in the day.

Lynda Hardman, who is helping with the publication of the book, said: “This project was intended as a celebration of the pool, collating stories and history, through memories, family archives and photos.

“The memories of our contributors who were fortunate enough to experience the pool are now brought to life in this full colour book.

“By purchasing it, you’ll be supporting the Troon RNLI Lifeboat Station, as all proceeds will be donated there.

“The book is great if you are curious to learn more about the pool, or perhaps have the desire to enjoy a wander along memory lane.”

The project was conceived by friends Caroline MacDonald (nee Mirtle) and Jan Price (nee Bennie) after they reconnected, 45 years later, over social media as they revealed their fond memories of being at the pool.

Now it’s grown and grown and the book will be officially launched on December 6.

Lynda said: “Thanks to a collective effort of several local contributors, the book is due for release on Friday, December 3.

“There has been a lot of interest shown and very positive feedback so far.”

The book is priced £15 and all proceeds will go to the Troon RNLI Lifeboat Station.
