The awkward press conference exchange that left Warren Gatland visibly unimpressed

Warren Gatland was a relieved man after Wales somehow overcame France to secure a narrow Rugby World Cup quarter-final win.

And when it came to his post-match press conference, he admitted he'd been through the emotional ringer during an 80 minutes that was so nearly his last as Wales coach. You can read the full transcript here.

He was, of course, proud of his players, praising the character they once again showed when it mattered most.

But there was one rather odd exchange when Gatland seemed confused and a little incredulous when a journalist asked him if he was disappointed lots of supporters in the stadium had left by the end.

The video above shows the awkward exchange and the transcript is below.

Q: How disappointing was it to play out the finale in a half empty stadium?

WG: I didn’t see anyone leave.

Q: It was about half empty, a lot of people left?

WG: So.

Q: I’m just asking if it’s disappointing?

WG: Why?

Q: Because you want as many people there to enjoy the moment and a quarter-final of the World Cup?

WG: There were probably a lot of people leaving who thought the game was won and were trying to get away to beat the traffic.

I leave games early to get away and beat the traffic.
