The awkward moment Garry Monk publicly snubbed Birmingham City's Pep Clotet as ex-Swansea City and Leeds United boss explains reaction

The feud between ex-Swansea City boss Garry Monk and his former assistant Pep Clotet played out in public fashion on Wednesday night when the two were reunited on the touchline at Hillsborough.

Clotet's Birmingham City were visiting Monk's Sheffield Wednesday in a match that ended 1-1.

The build-up to the fixture was dominated by Monk's about Clotet, who he revealed he no longer speaks to after a falling out.

And when the Spaniard tried to shake hands before the game started, Monk blanked him, prompting awkward scenes.

After the match, Monk explained the snub.

“It’s a personal situation with someone I invested a hell of lot of emotion and time with and classed as a friend, he chose to do a different thing in the worst possible way and that cuts deep, I am not going to be fake or make things up. That’s not me,” Monk said .

“If you don’t respect me, why should i respect you in that way - that’s why I didn’t shake his hand.”

Asked if he regretted his press conference comments about his former No.2, Monk said: “I wasn’t making accusations, claims, comments, I was speaking facts - that’s what it is.

“I wish it wasn’t true, every part of my body but I have to stay consistent and true to myself.

“You ask anyone who has ever worked with me I have been honest and open, I was asked the question so why shouldn’t I be honest and open?

“Why shouldn’t I? I have nothing to hide, why should I shy away from that.

“If people don’t like to hear that I accept that but I am going to be who I am.

“I didn’t do it for a reaction, I had nothing to gain from it. What I have to do in that moment is be open and honest - that’s who I am.

“I understand the reaction, the thing you have to remember is I know those (Birmingham) fans very well, I know them incredibly well and I know how passionate they are for their club and how hard they will fight to protect that club to their last breath.

“I was part of that, that’s what I tapped into. I respect that but I didn’t do it to gain anything, I clearly don’t gain anything from that, I know that.”

Clotet was in the Liberty dugout when Monk guided Swansea to their highest Premier League finish of eighth in 2015-16.

The duo continued their working relationship at Leeds United and St Andrew's, but their relationship appeared to go sour, with Clotet replacing Monk when he left the Midlands club at the end of last season.

Clotet responded to the situation by saying: "That’s up to him. I wanted to ask him why he said that and offer my handshake. One thing I loved from British football is that whatever the rivalry, whatever the game, whatever the problems in the game, whatever happens, manners are on top of everything.

"We are football coaches, I represent Birmingham, when I try to talk to him I give him my hand I give him the hand of Birmingham City. I really like that."
