The awful state campers left Somerset beauty spot in

Enjoy Somerset safely, but don't use it as a toilet.

That is the message from management team Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) after tourists dumped trash including toilet paper at popular attractions.

People have already been seen flooding into the West Country since the easing of lockdown restrictions started on Saturday, July 4.

No camping or overnight stays are allowed in any of the visitor car parks, nature reserves or open access areas.

But rubbish is being left behind by people setting up camps regardless.

Single-use wipes and toilet paper have been left at visitor car parks, where it is suggested people in campervans have been staying overnight.

The management team expects more visitors to the area than ever this summer.

It is warning against people staying overnight in car parks, taking up already-limited spaces which could be used by "legitimate day visitors".

Jim Hardcastle, manager of the Mendip Hills AONB, told Somerset Live: "We're regularly finding piles of single-use wipes and toilet paper behind bushes near visitor car parks as many of the camper vans we see staying overnight clearly don't have toilets facilities in them.

"This creates a real hazard for wildlife and other people."
