The awful mess left on a Blaenau Gwent mountain

This was the scene left on a Blaenau Gwent mountainside for someone else to clear up.

Used sanitary products, empty lager cans and a towel with what appeared to be blood on it were fly-tipped on Friday on Manmoel Road near Ebbw Vale.

Council litter-picker volunteer Charlene Baker said she went up to the scene after being alerted to the mess on the scenic county road.

She has now shared her pictures of the mess to raise awareness of the awful impact of fly tipping on the environment.

Charlene, a mum-of-three said: "It made me feel really sad and flustered to see our beautiful countryside community littered with household rubbish.

"Our once beautiful mountain side had become a dumping ground for all kinds of rubbish.

"There was food, puppy pads covered in faeces, loads of beer cans, glass bottles, paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, wrapping paper that all can be recycled and the food waste

"Towels with blood on, dirty ladies sanitary products, pregnancy tests, dirty underwear."

Charlene said she cleared up the mess despite being on crutches and having a boot fall apart during the work.

The mess has been reported to Blaenau Gwent council.

The 38-year-old said: "I normally do spot checks up there when i am well enough and not in too much pain.

"I enjoy it, it takes my mind off my health problems.

"My daughter also helps me, she is 12 now but she has been doing it from a very early age. I want to teach her right from wrong and to respect our wonderful community we live in."

A spokesman for Blaenau Gwent council said: "It is the council’s policy to pass complaints about fly tipping to environmental health which will result in a formal investigation by a fully trained, experienced enforcement officer and if we find sufficient evidence to enable a prosecution we pursue one."
