Newcastle remain rock bottom of the Premier League after this weekend's round of fixtures and are six points away from safety.
Eddie Howe will take charge of his first game at St. James' Park against Norwich knowing it's a must win for the Magpies.
The Canaries have been revitalised under new boss Dean Smith, taking four points from their last two games, leapfrogging the Magpies in the process.
Newcastle have just six points from their opening 13 Premier League fixtures and risk being cut adrift from the rest of the division.
It's the Magpies worst ever start to a Premier League season, but with 75 points still to play for, all is not lost.
We've taken a look at the points tally needed to ensure Premier League survival for the past ten seasons.
Since the 2011-12 season, the average points needed to ensure survival is 35 points.
Last season's 29 points in the 2020-21 campaign is the lowest points tally needed for survival, with the highest being 38 points in 2015-16.
So with 35 points the average needed for survival, Newcastle would need 29 points from their remaining 25 games.
That equates to an average points per game of 1.16.
However, Newcastle can ill afford to drop points against their relegation rivals like they have in recent weeks.
They face the Canaries and Burnley at St. James' Park in the next two Premier League fixtures which are must win.
Newcastle have time on their side and Howe will be given the January transfer window to strengthen the Magpies squad but they're in need of points before then.
