The astonishing story of how Edinburgh Zoo's famous Penguin March first began

They have been the stars of the show since first arriving at Edinburgh Zoo, just months after the doors were opened to the public.

The zoo's first ever three king penguins docked in Leith in 1913 and by 1919 the zoo had its first successful hatching of a chick.

These penguins were the fist to be seen anywhere outside of the South Atlantic, attracting visitors from far and near to catch a glimpse of the waddling birds.

Fast forward more than 100 years on and the zoo is renowned for its penguins, who remain one of the top attractions - with the modern day added bonus of a penguin cam.

As most Edinburgh Zoo fans know, it is the Penguin Parade that people time their visit around - rushing from the lion enclosure just in time to get up close to the penguins.

It is a tradition that dates back to the early days of Edinburgh Zoo in the 1950s but has rather unorthodox beginnings.

There was no grand opening like you might expect, and it wasn't a special parade for visiting royalty, but rather a simple accident.

The now famous Penguin March began when a gate was accidentally left open leading to a gentoo penguin escaping.

The keeper made the decision to see what would happen and it was soon followed by other penguins to the front of the Zoo. And the rest they say, was history.
