The astonishing Alexis Sanchez figures that will stun Arsenal and Manchester United fans

It must be easy for Arsenal fans to have a chuckle to themselves while Manchester United supporters shake the heads in despair when thinking about Alexis Sanchez's transfer to Old Trafford in January last year.

The Chilean international has struggled to discover any kind of form and has spent large portions of the current season out injured.

There was hope the former Barcelona star would kick on this term after a slow start to life at Old Trafford but with just two goals in 23 appearances things still aren't clicking.

The 30-year-old has had both knee and hamstring injuries that have kept him out of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer squads and no doubt Sanchez will be eager to get back in action.

Premier League permutations: Champions League place confirmed, what an Arsenal win would mean

Solskjaer said ahead of this weekend's match against West Ham: “He has done lots of injury work and is now injury free.

“Now he’ll step up and train with the team. He will probably be in the squad for West Ham on Saturday and let’s see how much, and if he plays."

That sounds like the former Gunner will line up as a substitute, and despite a tough time, it's his time on the bench that might keep Sanchez laughing all the way to the bank.

He has been paid almost £5m (£4,881,014) just to sit on the bench – he has sat on the bench for 15 hours and 17 minutes, at £5,323 per minute according to research .

That is more than anyone else in the Premier League and might leave a wry smile on the face of anyone connected to Arsenal.

Arsenal's plan to show Troy Deeney they really do have the 'cojones' to beat Watford

Though maybe not for too long when Mesut Ozil is also among the most costly contenders - he has earned almost £3.3m just to sit on the bench for 10 hours and 26 minutes due to his difficulty making it into Unai Emery's side as the Gunners' highest paid star. He's even managed to make more when he has not been included in the matchday squad.

He still lies behind players from the Premier League's title chasers in Liverpool and Manchester City however. Daniel Sturridge and Riyad Mahrez have both earned more than £4m as substitutes with 2,353 and 1,450 minutes on the bench respectively.

Nicolas Otamendi also comes in ahead of Ozil with a hefty £3.8m earned during his time in the dugout.

Given their position in the league, money seems to talk.
