The Assignments: the best photos taken by the British press over the past year

Press photographers are visual storytellers, documenting everything from wars to red carpets and world cups to riots – yet, generally their work is only available in newspapers or online.

Now, a must-visit exhibition is opening in London this weekend that showcases some the best photography taken by the British press over the past year.

The Assignments exhibition will feature everything from some of the biggest news events of the past year to striking images of the human condition.

One of the biggest news events from the past year, the royal wedding between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will take centre stage at the exhibition, along with images like English fans celebrating during the FIFA World Cup last year, Theresa May being handed a mock P45 notice during a conference and some more harrowing images of civilians fleeing from ISIL's last remaining territory in Syria.

At Bargehouse, Oxo Tower Wharf from May 17 to 19, you can view the annual exhibit as chosen by The British Press Photographers Association.
