'The Ashton Lane of Shawlands' gets green light as Italian restaurant Oro to transform courtyard

Plans to create 'The Ashton Lane of Shawlands' have been granted permission by Glasgow City Council.

Owners of Oro in Kilmarnock Road are transforming the area behind the Italian eatery to include a beer terrace and a number of mixed use units which could be used as art studios, cafes, hairdressers and restaurants.

The plans for the courtyard comprising 35-87 Kilmarnock Rd, 12-20 Mount Stuart St, 3-27 Walton St and 74 - 124 Deanston Drive would provide a Class 1 retail unit, Class 3 coffeeshop and a Class 3 restaurant according to the planning papers.

Boss Domenico Crolla said the plans for the disused back court have been in the works for five years and he's excited to bring something new to the southside's food and drink scene.

He told Glasgow Live : "Shawlands is ready for a big boom. More and more people are moving here. I think the bubble is going to burst eventually for Finnieston and the west end, which is a bit more studenty. This will be like a grown-up Ashton Lane. We''re looking forward to making it happen."

It's explained that one unit is to be transformed into an entrance pend to the newly formed square of public realm, formed by the existing tenements and a new one-and-a-half two storey commercial building.

The architecture will also reflect 'old Scotland,' with design cues from classic architectural details in Shawlands and the surrounding areas. The site will take inspiration from the commercial buildings within the so-called 'culture quarter' on 970-1010 Pollokshaws Road, where the Park Lane Market pop-up is held.

The proposal received 36 objections from the local community regarding issues such as noise pollution, privacy and parking, which saw spaces scaled down from 28 to 11. Chiefs said it remains "in line with the relevant policies" of the council's Development Plan.
