The Ashes: England player ratings from First Test as star proves worryingly ineffective

Australia took a 1-0 lead in the Ashes after captain Pat Cummins struck the winning runs to seal a dramatic two wicket victory in the first Test at Edgbaston.

It was an utterly enthralling contest right from ball one, which England opener Zak Crawley crunched through the covers for four, and has set the tone for the remaining four Tests. Both teams can take plenty of positives into the second Test at Lord's, but also have room for improvement.

And England will not be taking a backward step despite their defeat, with captain Ben Stokes vowing: "I am not going to change the way I have gone about my cricket because it is the Ashes."

Here are the England player ratings...

Zak Crawley - 7

Finally a first ball in the Ashes that England got absolutely spot on. Solid start with a first innings fifty, needs to build on that now and make his next start a biggie.

Ben Duckett - 4

Perhaps a little tentative. Playing at virtually every ball sends out a message that no ball is safe, but also that every ball could take a wicket.

‌Ollie Pope - 5

Full of energy and keen to dominate. Looked good while he was there but got in an unnecessary tangle against Lyon and could do nothing about a Cummins special.

‌Joe Root - 9

Another hugely impressive start to a series and looks full of runs all summer, if he can just keep choosing the right ball to ‘entertain’ with. Unlikely to get stumped again.

‌Harry Brook - 7

Had the chance to bend the game to his will, and looked comfortable against the Aussie attack. Fell to two unnecessary dismissals though. His impact in the series should be greater already.

‌Ben Stokes - 7

Another influential match as captain trying to push the game on and made an impact with bat and ball too. His declaration was not the biggest crime. Had to rub eyes after dropped catch.

‌Jonny Bairstow - 6

Reassuring to see that his form with the bat from last summer hasn’t deserted him, but he will need lots more runs to stay in credit if his keeping remains patchy. Expect rapid improvement.

‌Moeen Ali - 5

An understandably rusty performance, with glimpses of brilliance. Unlucky not to take more than three wickets while 30 more minutes of his batting probably wins the game.

Stuart Broad - 8

Fired up brilliantly for his team and the crowd and the Ashes. Consistently England’s most threatening bowler and kept two of the world’s best very quiet. Strong start.

‌Ollie Robinson - 7

He loves Ashes cricket on and off the field and is going to have some fun this summer. A handful with the ball and an irritant without it. Don’t change, keep talking and adding to the drama.

James Anderson - 5

Worryingly ineffective by his high standards. Conditions were not helpful but that rarely stops him. Suspect will play one of the next two, England need to pick the right one.
