The Arsenal player who was 'surprised' by his summer transfer to the Emirates Stadium

For Arsenal, the 2020 summer transfer window certainly did not fail to deliver.

After capping off an extended 2019/20 campaign by winning their first trophy of the Mikel Arteta era, beating Chelsea 2-1 at Wembley to lift the FA Cup, the Gunners wasted no time in looking to strengthen their squad.

First, right-back Cedric Soares and centre-back Pablo Mari joined the club on a permanent basis after initially joining the Gunners on loan back in January before former Chelsea winger Willian joined on a free-transfer.

The Gunners, who suffered a second successive Premier League home defeat on Sunday evening, going down 3-0 at home to Aston Villa, then decided to loosen the purse strings, spending big money on Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhaes and Atletico Madrid midfield enforcer Thomas Partey.

Mikel Arteta impressed by how well Gabriel and Partey have settled in

Partey's arrival, which came as a result of the Gunners triggering the £45million release clause within his Atletico contract, was Arteta's standout addition of the summer, with the Spaniard having been desperate to strengthen his central-midfield options.

Arsenal were heavily linked with both Partey and Lyon ace Houssem Aouar throughout the summer, but ended up landing just Partey, with a bid for Aouar having been knocked back by the Ligue 1 club.

Whilst Partey's arrival in north London was met with a wave of excitement, as it capped off a strong summer transfer window in style, it wasn't just the first-team squad that Arteta was keen to bolster.

Throughout the summer, the Gunners continued to add to their youth ranks, signing the likes of Tim Akinola and George Lewis.

Lewis joined the Gunners on a permanent basis, signing a professional contract, after leaving Norwegian club Fram Larvik.

Now, Lewis has revealed that he was amazed to learn of Arsenal's interest in signing him, insisting he was "surprised."

“Of course, I was surprised when I first heard about the interest, I think everyone was,” Lewis told VG (via Inside Futbol ).

“It has been a big leap in terms of level, but I feel I have handled it well.

“It was a challenge that I felt ready to take on.”

Though he is only the tender age of 20-years-old, the youngster has grand ambitions for the future, insisting it is "special" to be wearing an Arsenal shirt.

“Where I come from, there are many who have not believed in me,” he added.

“That’s why it’s nice to be here now and it is always special to wear an Arsenal kit to play football matches.”
