The Arsenal morning headlines as fans pick team vs Portsmouth, transfer plans, injury boost

Here are your Arsenal morning headlines for Monday, 2nd March.

Team to face Portsmouth

The Gunners are in action against Portsmouth tonight, with a place in the FA Cup quarter-final at stake for the winners.

Ahead of the game at Fratton Park,  football.london  offered fans the chance to step into Mikel Arteta's shoes and pick the team to take on the League One outfit

Supporters were asked who they'd like to start the game against Portsmouth and those who responded came up with some interesting selections.

The most popular team includes a back four comprising of Ainsley Maitland-Niles at right-back and Bukayo Saka at left-back, with January signing Pablo Mari and Rob Holding in the middle, in front of Emiliano Martinez in goal.

In midfield, Arsenal fans want to see a midfield trio of Lucas Torreira, Granit Xhaka and Joe Willock.

There is no place for the likes of Mesut Ozil, Alexandre Lacazette and top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as fans want to see a front three of Reiss Nelson, Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Martinelli.

Arsenal's transfer plans

Arsenal will have to make tough decisions over the future of key players if they fail to qualify for Europe next season.

That's the view of the head coach.

"I think the damage caused by the club not being in the Champions League for the third season is really big," Arteta conceded. "Financially the impact is enormous because the structure of this club is built to be in the Champions League and you can sustain that for one year or two, but then after you have to start making decisions.

"So we will have to make decisions one way or the other depending on the scenario we find ourselves, whether we are in the Champions League, Europa League or nowhere near that.

"And we'll have a very clear plan of what we want to do and depending where we are we have to act like this."

Injury boost

Arsenal have been handed an injury boost ahead of the game against Pompey as Shkodran Mustafi was pictured in training at London Colney on Sunday afternoon.

football.london understand he will still be assessed ahead of the game and that Sead Kolasinac will be out until the international break.

The German was forced off in extra time during Arsenal's shock defeat to Olympiacos and after the match Mikel Arteta admitted it could have been cramp.

"I don't know," head coach Mikel Arteta said when asked what injury caused Mustafi to make a premature departure in his post-match press conference . "He said to me 'I cannot play anymore'.

"I don't know if it's a cramp or a muscle injury so I'm sure there will be a few of those because the players were exhausted, they played four times in seven days and it was physically a very demanding game."

But being in training shows the injury wasn't too bad and the German should be in contention to start at Fratton Park.

Leno branded "lazy"

Bernd Leno has been "lazy and slack-minded" at times for Arsenal this season.

That's according to Gunners legend Charlie Nicholas.

"I am a fan of Bernd Leno, but he gets lazy and slack-minded, and the whole of the defence is like that," Nicholas told Sky Sports . "[Mikel] Arteta has worked on the shape and protection with organisation – it is better and it looks better, but the issue is not solved.

"I watched them win at Olympiakos, this was their best route into the Champions League.

"However, they are a million miles away from a team that would win the Europa League.

"This is not the toughest Europa League to win. Some of the teams that have come in from the Champions League are not as great as what they were.

"Sevilla are not as good, Ajax are now out too."
