The Arsenal, Man City, Wolves and Brighton players handing Tottenham a transfer dilemma

Tottenham's first signing for nearly two years was Jack Clarke from Leeds United.

But Spurs fans will not get to see the highly-rated teenager until the 2020/21 season.

That is because the winger immediately returned to Elland Road on a season-long loan deal.

The Whites wanted to keep him for another year and Spurs saw it as good for his development. They had, after all, come to a similar arrangement with MK Dons when they signed Dele Alli in 2015.

However, is Clarke going to find it more difficult than Alli did?

The Championship season is four games old and Clarke is yet to have a minute of playing time.

The 18-year-old was on the bench for the opening league game of the season, but remained on it as Leeds won 3-1 at Bristol City.

Clarke was once again an unused substitute in the 1-1 raw with Nottingham Forest, days after the transfer window closed.

He played in the Carabao Cup clash with Salford City, but then missed out on the squad entirely for the Championship clash with Wigan Athetlic.

And then, against Brentford on Wednesday night, Clarke was once more left out entirely.

So is the loan back to Leeds really good for his development?

The problem for Clarke is the EFL loan rule, which states that a club may name no more than five loan players in an 18-man matchday squad. Leeds have six loanees in total, meaning one will always miss out.

So far, that has been Clarke.

And if that theme continues, Spurs may step in and change their plans over his loan.

The loanees in his way are:

Illan Meslier - Second-choice goalkeeper, likely to be on the bench every week.

Ben White - Brighton defender who has been an ever-present so far - unlikely to lose his place any time soon.

Jack Harrison - Man City winger who has also played every league game.

Helder Costa - Wolves forward who has come off the bench in every league game so far.

Eddie Nketiah - Arsenal striker who has been on the bench for the last two matches, scoring the winner against Brentford on Wednesday night when coming on.
