The Arsenal legend who will be in the dugout with Freddie Ljungberg against Norwich

Arsenal have announced that former defender Per Mertesacker will be helping with first team duties under caretaker boss Freddie Ljugberg.

Ljungberg was promoted to temporary head coach when Unai Emery was dismissed on Friday morning, and has since been working to prepare the team to face Norwich City at Carrow Road on Sunday afternoon.

Mertesacker was appointed as academy manager in summer 2018 after announcing his retirement from professional football. The ex-German international will now join Ljungberg in the dugout for the games that he takes charge of.

In his first interview since being appointed as caretaker, Ljungberg revealed that he was working hard to sort out a team of support staff before his first game in charge.

£Yes, I've been asked to try and organise what I can, of course, it's a very quick turnaround since yesterday and I'm trying to look at Norwich and sort everything out," he told Sky Sports News.

"But of course, we'll have things in place for the game tomorrow."

Mertesacker played 221 times for Arsenal, between the years of 2011 and 2018, scoring 10 goals and was part of the squad that lifted three FA Cups in four years under Arsene Wenger.

Former player Gilberto Silva has also been linked with a return to the Emirates Stadium to join Ljungberg's coaching team, although the Brazilian has said that there has been .
