The Arsenal legend who inspired Manchester United ace Scott McTominay

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has included former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira on his list of three midfield role models.

The 23-year-old Scotland international, who has scored five times for the Red Devils this season, has cemented himself as a key member of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad at Old Trafford this season, racking up 27 appearances in all competitions.

Though McTominay still has plenty of work to do before he is the complete, finished article, the signs are already suggesting that the youngster could establish himself as one of the Premier League's future midfield stars.

And now, the box-to-box midfielder has opened up on just who he has used as an inspiration to get himself into the position he already finds himself in at a tender age, with former Gunners star Vieira making the cut alongside Zinedine Zidane and former United man Roy Keane, who was renowned for his altercations with Vieira throughout his time at Old Trafford.

"For myself, someone who’s quite strong and a good runner, I should be testing teams more than I do,’ McTominay told Manchester United’s Box To Box.

"I should be breaking lines similar to what Paul [Pogba] does, drive into the box and create chances.

"We always have to have that balance of one goes and one sits, which is so important for a midfield player. Being box-to-box, there’s some amazing examples: Zidane, Patrick Vieira, Roy Keane, driving through the middle of the pitch and were exceptionally good at it.

"For me it’s important to keep watching clips like that, I get the guys to send them over as much as they can to analyse it."
