The Arsenal games Gabriel Magalhaes will miss after testing positive for COVID-19

Gabriel Magalhaes has tested positive for COVID-19, Arsenal have confirmed.

The summer signing from Lille missed the Boxing Day win over Chelsea after coming into contact with someone who had also tested positive for the coronavirus.

Speaking after the game, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said they were following government guidelines and protocols with COVID which meant Gabriel was set for a spell on the sidelines.

"We have to follow all the guidelines and protocols with COVID. The doctor is on top of that," Arteta said of Gabriel.

Mikel Arteta hopes Chelsea win will be a turning point for Arsenal

"For how long still it's not 100 per cent convinced but he was in contact with someone who has tested positive, then he has to stay away for a few days.

"No, it wasn't with another player in the Premier League.

"It was with someone in his bubble."

Arteta revealed that Gabriel hadn't tested positive ahead of the Chelsea game, but was self-isolating.

However, it's now been confirmed that the defender has now returned a positive test.

A statement on the club's official website reads:

"Has tested positive for COVID-19 and is isolating according to UK Government and Premier League protocols.

"We will continue to monitor and support Gabriel, and we are hoping he will be available again after our next two matches."

Arsenal's next two matches are both away from home against sides around them in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

On Tuesday evening they face Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium before kicking off 2021 with a trip to the Hawthorns to face West Brom.

The hope is that Gabriel will be available for selection against Newcastle United in the third round of the FA Cup on January, 9.
