The Arsenal defender Schalke 'wanted to sign' this summer - and it's not Shkodran Mustafi

Arsenal experienced a huge squad overhaul during the summer transfer window.

Aaron Ramsey and Danny Welbeck were among those to leave on a free transfer, Petr Cech retired from professional football, Alex Iwobi joined Everton and Henrikh Mkhitaryan completed a season-long loan move to AS Roma on European deadline day.

And there could have been one more departure, if reports are to be believed.

Gunners head coach Unai Emery made no secret that the door was open for defender Shkodran Mustafi to leave following the arrival of David Luiz and the German subsequently dropping down the pecking order.

"We have now some players, they know their situation," the Spaniard told reporters. "For example, Elneny and Mustafi know their position in the squad and really I want the players to be happy here.

"I want the players to be protagonists here.

"Last year with Mustafi and Mo, when they didn't play they weren't happy and I spoke with them a lot of times last year and this pre-season and I think it is positive for them to leave and sign for another team where they can be protagonists and be happy and continue their careers.

"They are very big players but for one circumstance or another, they are going to have less chances to show their capacity or to be happy with us and the minutes they play in matches.

"But they know the situation and really, really I am wishing the best for them and I think now the best for them is to be protagonists in another team and sign and to get another challenge for them with another team."

Whilst Elneny departed for Besiktas on loan, Mustafi has stayed put at the Emirates Stadium.

But according to reports in Germany, the centre-back's defensive teammate Sead Kolasinac was wanted elsewhere.

IKZ  claim that Schalke showed interest in signing the left-back who left the Bundesliga outfit to sign for Arsenal on a free transfer a couple of summers ago.

Although the report states that a return to the VELTINS-Arena for Kolasinac was ruled out due to financial reasons.

The Gunners did end up cashing in on one left-back this summer with Nacho Monreal leaving to join Real Sociedad on the eve of the north London derby.

This means Kolasinac is set to play a prominent role under Emery, at least until £25m summer signing Kieran Tierney returns to full fitness.
