The Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs players who failed to live up to expectations

Football supporters generally think they can spot the next superstar.

Whether it be a new signing or a youth product, fans can often get excited by one - or more - player and tip them for great things.

But as many have found out not everyone can become the next Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo or even emulate the likes of Diego Maradona, Pele and the original Ronaldo.

Therefore, football.london posed this question to supporters on Twitter: 'Which footballer didn't live up to your expectations?'

And the responses were eye-opening.

A popular choice was Freddy Adu. The American was seen as the next big thing even at the age of 14, and was linked with a move to Manchester United.

But it's safe to say he failed to live up to his potential and was released by Las Vegas (yes that's a football club!) last December and remains a free agent.

There were mentions of ex-Arsenal stars Jack Wilshere, Quincy Owusu-Abeyie, Arturo Lupoil, Abou Diaby, Carlos Vela and Fran Merida.

Ex-Tottenham Hotspur starlet John Bostock got a shout out as did ex-Chelsea winger Marko Marin, while there were also mentions for Anderson, Frederico Macheda, Micah Richards, Mario Balotelli and Adriano.
