R number at one

It comes as figures have emerged showing the R number – the measure of how many new people are infected by each case – is below one everywhere in the UK, except the South West.

The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine data says the South West's R number is at one, as of May 24 – which would make it the only place in the country where cases would not drop.

Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham shared the statistics this morning (June 5), saying: "The South West stands out as the biggest cause for concern.

"I will continue to publish these stats every week until the Government does."
