The areas where coronavirus is growing fastest in Wales

Coronavirus is now growing so fast in Wales that the First Minister has closed schools early for Christmas and is planning for a January lockdown.

Speaking on Friday he said: "The virus is spreading faster than all our models have predicted," and added "coronavirus is now firmly entrenched in many parts of Wales".

Every part of Wales is seeing increases in the virus with the exception of Anglesey.

We've gone through Public Health Wales data to see the places in Wales where the disease is spreading the most quickly. We compared the figures released on Friday, December 10, with seven days before.

These figures are seven-day rolling totals for new cases adjusted for population ( per 100,000 people ). It is important to remember that though these figures are a useful guide they are just part of the story.

If testing massively increases in one place there is likely to be a rise in confirmed cases.

However these figures are still a vital factor in Welsh Government and Public Health Wales decision-making.

Bridgend

Last week Bridgend saw its highest ever numbers of cases. The virus in now growing faster there than any other part of Wales.

Conwy

Though the northern county of Conwy is far from the place with the most Covid, cases have shot up in the last seven days.

They have gone from 40 cases per 100,000 of population to 92 - a rise of 130%.

Merthyr Tydfil

If anything is an example that mass testing is not a magic bullet it is Merthyr.

The Welsh Government carried out mass testing there only a month ago and it is again the area with the most cases in Wales.

Newport

The original epicentre of the virus in Wales, cases had seemed relatively suppressed until recently when they have skyrocketed.

Caerphilly

The first place in Wales to go into a local lockdown, Caerphilly had the virus relativly under control until the last 10 days when it has flown up.

This table shows the growth rates in every local authority:
