The areas of Newport with the highest levels of coronavirus

The area of Newport with the highest rate of coronavirus currently has an average of 122 cases per 100,000.

This is according to new hyperlocal data published by Public Health Wales showing the number of cases relative to population.

The five areas of Newport with the highest seven-day rolling average as of October 20 are:

  • Duffryn & Maesglas - 122.1
  • Maindee - 112.7
  • Gaer - 86.6
  • St Julians & Barnardtown - 84.6
  • Marshfield - 83.7

At present, the current average across Newport as a whole is 64 per 100,000.

There are currently nine areas in the city where the rate of cases recorded is above this average.

What does this data actually mean?

It is really important to bear in mind that this data is very volatile because it covers such small areas (i.e. council wards).

Where an area has a very small population, even one positive case can push up the cases per 100,000 up significantly. You should therefore be cautious from drawing too many conclusions directly from the information.
