The areas of Newport where there are almost no coronavirus cases

Many areas of Newport are now seeing almost no coronavirus cases, new figures show.

Hyper-local data published by Public Health Wales (PHW) have shown that nearly half of all ward areas in the city recorded between zero and two cases of the virus from March 13 to March 19.

Caerleon, Bettws, Beechwood, St Julians & Barnardtown, Ridgeway & Glasllwch, Pye Corner & Graig, the Gaer and Marshfield all recorded between zero and two cases in that period.

Pillgwenlly & Docks (14), Ringland (10) and Stow Hill (8) recorded the highest number of cases in the same period.

Here's the latest map showing which parts of the city have the most cases:

What does this data actually mean?

The data above is based on the rolling seven-day average between March 13 and March 19. It is really important to bear in mind that this data is very volatile because it covers such small areas. Where an area has a very small population even one positive case can push up the rate of cases per 100,000 significantly.

You should therefore be cautious about drawing too many conclusions directly from the information.

As of March 23, the rate of infection per 100,000 in Wales is 42 , below the key Welsh Government benchmark of 50.

Earlier this week First Minister Mark Drakeford said he still hoped to lift the 'stay local' rule in Wales at the end of the week.

Speaking to Members of the Senedd during a plenary meeting he said he was "optimistic" that he would be able to allow people to travel more widely within Wales if case numbers continue to fall.

The Welsh Government is due to announce the outcome of its latest review of the current restriction on Friday.
