The areas of Cardiff with the highest rates of coronavirus cases

New data showing which parts of Cardiff has the highest rates of coronavirus has been revealed.

The latest local data for the Welsh capital shows that the fire-break has had a positive impact on cases which were in excess of 1,100 cases per 100,000 of population for some areas two week ago.

Despite this, cases are still high for some areas though it should be remembered that the full impact of the firebreak may not be felt yet.

The hyper-local data shows the amount of coronavirus cases and the number of cases in relation to population.

Within the city the wards with the highest incidence rates of the virus are Grangetown South (362 per 100,000), Tremorfa and Pengam (254), and Grangetown North (234).

This interactive map shows the areas of the city with the highest levels of the virus. You can click on your area to find out more:

What does this data actually mean?

The data is based on the rolling seven-day average between November 6 and November 12.

It is really important to bear in mind that this data is very volatile because it covers such small areas. Where an area has a very small population even one positive case can push up the rate of cases per 100,000 significantly.

You should therefore be cautious about drawing too many conclusions directly from the information.

For example Butetown and Pontprennau in Cardiff have almost exactly the same number of cases (20 each) but the number of cases per 100,000 of population are very different (185 and 229 respectively). This is because Butetown has a far larger population than Pontprennau.

This table shows a breakdown of different parts of the city:
