The areas of Cardiff with the highest rates of coronavirus

Two parts of Cardiff have more than 1,000 cases of coronavirus per 100,000 of population.

The latest local data for the Welsh capital shows that the virus is still extremely widespread in the city with 40 out of 48 wards being about 500.

It should be remembered that the full effect of the level four lockdown will not have started to bite yet, so cases will likely fall over the coming weeks.

The hyper-local data shows the amount of coronavirus cases and the number of cases in relation to population.

Within the city the wards with the highest incidence rates of the virus are Splott (1411 per 100,000), Fairwater South (1,056), and Canton (954).

This interactive map shows the areas of the city with the highest levels of the virus. You can click on your area to find out more:

What does this data actually mean?

The data is based on the rolling seven-day average between December 16 and December 22.

It is really important to bear in mind that this data is very volatile because it covers such small areas. Where an area has a very small population even one positive case can push up the rate of cases per 100,000 significantly.

You should therefore be cautious about drawing too many conclusions directly from the information.

For example Fairwater South and Llanishen have the same number of cases 68) but the number of cases per 100,000 of population are very different (1,056 and 707 respectively). This is because Llanishen has a far larger population than Fairwater South.

This table shows a breakdown of different parts of the city:

The high number of cases is impacting in the local hospitals.

The latest data for Cardiff and Vale Health Board is:

  • Total beds - 1,602

  • Total beds with Covid-19 patients - 316 (19% of total beds)

  • Total beds spare - 412

  • Total intensive care beds - 51

  • Total intensive care beds with Covid 19 patients - 19 (37% of total beds)

  • Total intensive care beds spare - 6
