The areas of Cardiff where coronavirus is rising fastest

Four areas of Cardiff now have over 1,000 coronavirus cases per 100,000 people as the virus continues to spread across the country, new figures show.

Hyper-local data published daily by Public Health Wales shows the amount of coronavirus cases and the number of cases in relation to population.

Within the city the wards with the highest incidence rates of the virus are Splott (1,378), Canton (1,108), Fairwater South (1,087) and Rumney( 1087).

The student areas of Cathays North (625.7) and Cathays South & Bute Park (434.3) are now much further down the list - albeit recording over 400 additional cases per 100,000 than three weeks ago.

Butetown has the lowest rate of infection with 379.4 per 100,000.

What does this data actually mean?

The data is based on the rolling seven-day average between December 11 and December 17.

The above graph is based on the available data published by Public Health Wales on December 21.

It is really important to bear in mind that this data is very volatile because it covers such small areas. Where an area has a very small population even one positive case can push up the rate of cases per 100,000 significantly.

You should therefore be cautious about drawing too many conclusions directly from the information.

For example, in Cardiff, Canton and Fairwater South have almost exactly the same number of cases per 100,000 of population. But Fairwater only has 70 cases to Canton's 102 36 because the population of Fairwater is lower.
