The areas least affected by coronavirus in Greater Manchester

Coronavirus cases are rising across Greater Manchester, but there are some communities with only a handful of positive test results.

High Lane in Stockport is the least affected neighbourhood in the region with just one case, followed by Marple & Hawk Green with three and Broughton Park in Salford with four.

The least affected areas can be revealed via an interactive map charting the number of positive Covid-19 test results in each neighbourhood.

The map, drawn up using Office for National Statistics (ONS) data, reveals the number of coronavirus infections per 'neighbourhood' per 100,000 people in the week ending June 26.

While there are no Covid-free zones in Greater Manchester, many have fewer than 25 cases.

The neighbourhoods with an infection rate less than 200 are shaded in light blue and those with a rate less than 400 are shaded in deep blue.

Senior health figures have spoken of learning to live with new variants of the virus.

Earlier this week, Prof Chris Whitty has said that the idea that Covid variants can be stopped from entering the country is “not realistic”.

Speaking at a Royal Society of Medicine webinar, Prof Whitty said that Covid will eventually have to be managed in a similar manner to serious seasonal viruses such as flu.

“It is not flu, it is a completely different disease, but the point I am making is, here is a seasonal, very dangerous disease that kills thousands of people every year and society has chosen a particular way around it,” he said.

Sajid Javid, the new health secretary, made similar comments in the House of Commons.

When 'Freedom Day'was delayed from June 21, a review was announced which could have seen restrictions eased on July 5 – something that ministers have now rejected.

Mr Javid said: “While we decided not to bring forward Step 4, we see no reason to go beyond July 19, because, in truth, no date we choose comes with zero risk for Covid.

“We know we cannot simply eliminate it, we have to learn to live with it.”
